.461 Gibbs Farq. Home at last!
      #131393 - 04/04/09 08:34 AM

Well, I finally bit the paper patched bullet and ponied up for a Gibbs Farquharson!

I feel fortunate to have found a .461 No.2 as original and ungoofed with.
Interestingly, it is a pretty late build, pat. use #913, and Metford use #1843 and could very well be the last .461 made.
It has Birmingham proofs and a couple from the Vienna proof house.
Overall excellent condition right down to the spare front sights stored in the grip trap (two fine bead steel and one made of ivory!
It is sighted for the 100gr charge with the 360gr. bullet. Oh yes, the bore is absolutely as-new!!
I especially like the sculpting of the trigger guard around the hammer hinge pin.

These are the seller's pictures - I will take some full length pics soon.

Every time I see one of these falling blocks, I want one. Maybe an Alex Henry one of these days. This one's a beauty.

Huvius,

Simply superb! One more rifle has found a home in the right place - your gunsafe!

Very good hunting!

Found it on a German website.
http://www.jagd-waffe.com/
Another member here posted questions about a double they had, I looked at their other offerings, and there it was. Still listed in fact. Real money, but I think a reasonable deal (didn't have to pay full asking price).
BTW, they were very good to deal with - recommended.

Thanks. I have not canvassed the foreign sites much, maybe I should. What kind of costs and paperwork are associated with importing a gun?

I admired that rifle for a while. I had purchased the Purdey rifle. German, the owner, is a good guy. The 20 Bore Kavanaugh is a neat package.

Sharpsnitro, the total from my end was $310.
Mainly because you have to use a customs broker if the gun is over 2000euro - that is what the customs office here told me.
I agree with jaz. German Diethel paid for shipping in a hard case - I was happy to see he has an understanding of my shipping concerns.

Jaz,
did you get the underlever hammerless? Those sculpted fences are fantastic!
I am inclined to think that the chambering may be original (10.3X60R is .450/.400 2 3/8 after all).
Let me know if you ever want to move it along.

Huvius,

Thanks. I didn't know it was that cheap to do, relatively speaking. Have fun with it, I got into paper patched bullets a few years ago and have had a lot of fun with it.

Congratulations on a really fine rifle. There are not very many intact Gibbs left in the world. I look forward to seeing more pictures of it.

Finally got around to taking some (poor) pictures of some guns.

I have also been researching a little and thought some of you would find interest in what I have learned.

My Gibbs is patent use #913. Metford #1843, and Gibbs serial #18419. Sighted for the 360gr express loading.

Interestingly, the (known) .461 #2 which is closest to mine is APUN (action patent use number) #865 and Metford #1817. Built as a match rifle.
Then, after #865, all of the Gibbs Farquharsons were nitro rifles except possibly #896 which has Metford #1838. The original chambering is unknown but it is now a .22 Hornet.
Anyway, it seems that my rifle could very well be the last known .461 No.2 made. It might even be the last Gibbs Farq. with a Metford rifled barrel too! Pretty neat to think that my gun could be the ultimate example of the Farquharson/Gibbs/Metford partnership!

Once again, very nice rifle. One more thing to curse the Luftwaffe for I guess. Once again, the loss of the Gibbs records leave a puzzle that will never be solved.

I am breathless! What a beautiful rifle!

I know Glenn Fewless is banging his head on the brick fireplace. Calm down Glenn. . .

The gentleman in Germany who owns the JAGD site, German, is a good guy. I purchased the Purdey 450/400 and it was as described.
Good luck!
