the first action is a 12 gauge ,it is a GECO but it looks exactly like a mekel action the second one is a jp sauer & sons 16 gauge action the question is what modern cal can be built on these actions http://www.flickr.com/photos/36972995@N04/3405361560/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/36972995@N04/3404549833/

Measure the face of the guns and the firing pin holes for one.
A 577 2 3/4" NfB can be built on a Greener Empire (Boxlock) 12 Gauge action so that give you an idea of what close to the biggest is on a 12 gauge.

This "modern" calibre stuff, to me, if your going to build a DR on a shotgun action, build whatever you want within pressure limitations.
After all, your starting from scratch, the one limitation would be a chamber reamer if you come up with something obscure.
But pressure is the killer but they are good, strong actions.
Just my HO.

a nice 375 h&h would be good (off the shelf ammo)but would the actions handle that i have 2 x blank 470ne barrles chambered but on these actions i think that would be pushing things a bit far

If it was my barrels and actions i would give it a try on the merkel/geco, it would be a bit wide but if i allready got the stuff why not. The brass would be pritty far into the action and i think it would cope with the breech pressure, now as for how long it would hold up to it i dont know but it shouldnt give away at once.

Jesus, your game.
Remember, it only has to give way ONCE.
Could you live with yourself if a few mates came over and you decided to "let them have a go" an it blew up and killed someone ??????

If i built it and proofed it i would, and it would not blow up any more then any other gun with reloaded ammunition. And i didnt mean it would give away as blowing up i ment give away as in off face/dented breech. And this would not come at once, it would show up long before it would be harmfull to fire it. I have seen merkels blow up right at the end of the chamber and they didnt open a tiny bit, thats a bit more pressure then the 40000psi a 470 generates.
Also im not saying he should build it, im saying i would give it a try if i got the parts.

the 470 barrells i think will go one side till i can find a 20 g merkel action ,i saw that they are rated up to 500 will try to start this progect with 375 barrells and see how far i can take it , in the meanwhile i will look for the 20g action for a latter progect

got 2 by 30 cal barrells (billets) they are short when worked lucky if i get 22 inches the sauer action and the cal 300h&h is what i will try the barrels are for nothing as they are usless for a rifle got them on the possiblty that the double shall work if this all pans out that means new wood work as well , for the sauer action the last double that was built at the shop was a 470ne on a browning action the damm thing was very heavy ,lots of recoil due to the shotgun butt(the damm owner of the thing was to cheap scate to spring for proper wood work) if the thing is still at the shop will get some photos to post the 470 was built with a lott of thumb sucking as we have not done this before , in the end i regulated it , i have fired over 20 rounds with it , no problems exept for the headacke , a rifle stock would have dropped the recoil one hell of alot but it was shotgun wood all the way now the PERSON said we must sell the b..... thing as his doctor said he may not shoot heavy cals. hope the action was good enough for this cal.
