Westley 1871 stock is done.

I finished the stock for my Westley model 1871 improved martini in 577-500 #2 today. The wood came from Ebay, $125. The dies also came in the mail so I will load some rounds tomorrow.

Fantastic. Love the features. Beautiful wood grain and color. Is that a finished and checkered butt with no plate?

Nice board you bought there, Casper - absolutely stunning. That early Martini looks similar ot theone Ross Seyfried wrote up in DGJournal. It's so odd and clunky looking, forend held on with a wedge - entry pipe for cleaning rod- so 'muzzleloader-ish' - it's beautiful - even more so when you peruse the engraving.

It has a steel buttplate with trapdoor. I haunt the stock wood area of ebay and get lucky quite often. I've got better blanks for the same or cheaper but I believe the wood should match the grade of the gun it's going on. I have one blank that I might not ever own a gun good enough to use it on.

$85

$85??? SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HA! - great find indeed. That wood would be OK on a #1 or an 1877 Sharps.
Imagine, an action like that available in 1871, along with bolt actioned Mauser '71, or Peebody Martini and in 73, the US government went with a trapdoor instead.
