Rifle caliber choice in a Combo, Cape or Drilling
      #130893 - 30/03/09 01:59 PM

To all who will respond;
Given a choice what would be you pick for a caliber in a medium weight 12 gauge cape gun.............what say you ?????

I am asking this as I have a possible project. 12ga O/U barrels, 12ga/medium rifle barrels and 3rd a O/U rifle set up. I am thinking a light/medium with the 12ga for a forager/deer/boar gun and a light heavy in the O/U rifle. No stopper but a Buffalo gun.

If i was only hunting deer and black bear on down, i'd be using a 7x65R... But when you add moose into the menue, it's the 8x57jrs for me...

I also like the 9.3x74R, but it cost more to shoot, has more recoil, and most importantly to me, it doesn't shoot as flat as the 8x57jrs...

I REALLY like the way 200 Nosler partitions work on big game and they are my big game choise for all of my 8mm hunting!

How about:
light/medium: 12ga/ 6.5x57R, 7x57R or .303
light/heavy: 9.3x74, .375H&H Fl, or .450/.400NE
All available in factory loads, all available in component form...

12/12, 12/7x65r, 12/375 flanged.

Not the most common, but why not. And it would be buffalo sufficient in those above 9,5mm countries.

I have a gun on consignment which could be the answer to your need. You can examine it at.
http://www.drillinghotline.com/new.shtml

The beauty of the interchangeable barrel system is that virtually any caliber barrel can be added to the set, or the existing barrels can be altered to fit the shooter's taste.

The rifle barrel slides into the lower part of the monoblock and into a hanger at the muzzle. It is held in place by a set screw through the action lug. The European hunter can hunt roe deer with one rifle barrel and red deer and boar with the other one.

The American hunter can hunt turkey (where allowed) with the .222 combination, and deer or boar with the .30-'06 combination, particularly effective with a Brenneke in the shotgun barrel and 180 grain softpoints in the rifle barrel.

I actually used one just like this one in Africa and took smaller plains game (dik-dik, klipspringer, Tommies, Grants, impala) with the .222 barrel and larger animals, up to and including wildebeest with the .30-'06 barrel. It is a suitcase gun for all occasions.

Thanks for the input. I like the ideas and they are in the same vain I am thinking. I am wishing there was a reliable extraction system for rimless then it would be a 12x.30'06 and a O/U 375 H&H. But a 30R Blaser and a 375 Flng. will surely suffice. The raw materials for the project are still in negoiation, we shall see.

XAUSA,
I have admired that Teck, I like them alot. Decisions, decisions..........

DuggaBoy,
I am with you, I had a late friend who had 2 Vierlings. 1 bought in Austria during a business trip, he was a fairly famous bakery owner. The 2nd was a gift from his wife for 40 years marriage. The first I don't know for sure but the 2nd I do indeed as I shot that. It was a Scherling (sic) 12x12 over a .30'06 with a .22hornet in between the gun and rifle barrels. It had a claw mounted 4x S&B on it at 8lbs. He teamed it with a Churchill bolt in .458wm. never looking back and never wanting more.

My only vierling burned some years ago(along with several other treasures).
It was a 16ga. S/S, 22 Hornet(rechambered from 5.6x 35R before I bought it) and 10.75 x 65R with a fixed 2.5 X scope on claws.

Initially , it was a PITA to make the big Collath round (and get it to shoot) still I fell in love with it and still miss it.

For hunting I am likely to do most often, I would prefer to have a Drilling, 12/70 x 12/70 over 7 or 8X57R.
My current most versitile combo is my Drilling 16/70 x16/70 over 9.3x72R. I would prefer to have the above for sake of ammo available without handloads only, and the flat trajectory past 150 meters.

I enjoy my SXS combos of 12.7x44R X 16 and 9.5x56R x 16. More on the later later.

If I had the opportunity to hunt big critters like Asian buff, I would look to the 9.3x74R. I haven't seen the English calibers such as .375 Flanged or .450/.400 in a combination.

This would do for a replacement..............http://www.gunsinternational.com/SALE-Hubertus-Vierling-22H-x-16-x-16-x-8x57JR.cfm?gun_id=100026379
