Most common 12-bore rifle chamber length?
      #130734 - 29/03/09 08:52 AM

What was it? (fully rifled guns) any ideas? My book is still in the post from the US(sheesh) the gun rifle and hound in East and West by 'Snaffle'

Any of you know what 12-bore it was he used? Mentions it a lot.......from the online version, however I wish to read the real thing when it arrives.......but for those of you who have had the pleasure, what chamber length/load/bullet was he using?

Many thanks!

Ben

The average 12bore rifle with 2.5"chamber(65mm) was down in the puny end of the borerifles. Most of the hunting litterature mention 12bore as a "5 dramer". I know other 12s were made, but no-one mentions it in the huntinglitterature in the times of "borerifles". Some hunters of the "borerifle-period" had stated the 12bore as neither fowl or fish for hunting. The .577EX were much more preferred and more versatile because of power and trajectory and a more practical size doublegun.
Why do you seek info on 12s? Do you have one?

Thanks

I hope to have one one day soon........

Some writers used them as elephant guns it seems.......using ball.

The book I mentioned above is very 12-bore rifle biased. The gun rifle and hound in East and West by Snaffle.

Surely if the 577x2.75 can fit 6 drams the 12b 2.5 can fit 7-8?

ben

the 12 bore dbl. rifle was the medium DG caliber of the bore gun days, read sir s. baker on the subject and you will see that he loved the 12 bore and held it in high regard as a do it all gun, sort of the 375 H&H today.
yes the 2,5 can hold 7 drams +, and the full grown 12 bores were indeed the smallest recomended DG caliber when going all over the empire enjoying the sport of hunting.

best regards

peter

Thanks Peter

Spot on.......sounds good!

Thought the 12's were often described as being 'elephant guns' or rifles........something the bpe was never named as.

Did a 4.5" case really exist? how the hell would such a thing work?

Best wishes

Ben

I concur with Peter. My 16's hold 5 1/2 drams, a wad and ball, so the 12's will hold more - I thought 6 to 6 1/2 depending on wads used, but most likely 7 as per Peter and Greener's book.

I would bet that most 2 1/2 12's were regulated for less than 6 drams, the weight of the gun being the determining factor. A 3" chambered 12 or 13lb 12 bore ball or conical rifle would be very formidable indeed.

Back in the late 70"s I owned a cased Holland and Holland double rifle, underlever hammer, steel 24" barrels with original bullet mold in approx. 90% condition and chambered for a 4 1/4" case and made for 10 drams of black. The rifle weighed 16 lbs. It was made for the Nawab of Bhopal. I needed money and sold it a year after I bought it. (damn it!) I have the factory letter on it and one poor picture. I understand there was one other Holland, a 4 1/4" single rifle made. The load card was glued in the case.
