Isn't the world of photography great? That pic was posted some time ago somewhere else and the distance was estimated to be 30-40 yds or so. In this pic, it does look deceptively close. From the size of the barrel on this dude's rifle, I don't think he has a big enough gun. I'd need a 500 or better and a set of king size pampers.

I don't know. Looks like a 416-458 class of rifle. Bigger then the 375 anyway. Dibbs on the pampers too though!!

I'll bet the view through that scope gave a less humorous definition of the term "Jumbo".

My hat's off to those that been there done that.

To me it looks like the rifle's bolt has been turned up to render the rifle "safe".
Anyone else see this, or am I wrong? I just can't see the bolt handle down where it should be and I can see a blurred greyness roughly where an upturned bolt handle would be.

You could be right about that. On the other hand, perhaps it's an early prototype of the Blaser.

Nope, I can see that the bolt handle is down.

Passing a broomstick trough the earholes and shooting it in half he would be a bit to low or not ???
And to me it does seem that the bolt is lifted maybe the photo was taken with one of the tame ele's they have these days which they use for african ele riding safaris.
And another thing if the bull was charging wouldn't his ears be flattened and he's trunk curled up which we cannot see ?

bolt-handle is down.. it looks like an old magnum mauser without the bolt bent, if you look at teh mount-height of the scope, it would tend to re-inforce that notion... I can see a few miles of daylight between the tube and the reciever...

Bolt handle looks down to me. Hey safari-hunt, would you trust evey elephant to follow a textbook charge sequence, or would you cover him anyway?? It probably isn't as close as it seems in the picture...but part of me sure wishes I was there to find out!!

One of the problems with Mr Big-ears is that they can start a mock charge and change their minds half way through and decide to press is home....... or even the other way round.
All the books say that a real charge is indicated by flattened ears and curled trunks..... but have the elephants read the books?..........

I believe that photo was first posted on Dakota's website, so I suspect it is a Dakota rifle.
At least that's where I downloaded it 3 or 4 years ago.

You must have a heart of steel and titaniumballs but yes what the hell give it a go if the rifle is big enough.I would stick to my .460wby mag.

I don't think so Nitro! It looks to me like a Styer Mannlicher 458 WM with it's flat spoon bolt handle that rides very close to the stock and only turns out at the bottom, just above the trigger! Could be wrong, but that's the way it looks to me.
The distance to the ele may be longer than it looks in the picture, but 40 YDS? come-on! when you consider the angle from muzzle to ele's forehead, at 40 yds that ele would be 40 feet tall! I'd say the distance is no more than 50 feet, and I think closer! In any event, if the ele is as close as I think, the first shot better kill, or turn him, because the shooter will not get another shot, with that bolt rifle, if it doesn't! Again could be wrong!
