Was there ever a sporting version of the lightweight G33/40 action? If there was I imagine that it would have had a very short production span from 1940 to 1945?

The post-war Brno ZG-47 is essentially a commercial version of the G33/40 and was made in the same factory from 1947 onwards. Major differences included bolt handle, longer magazine, trigger options, and commercial finish. Later Brno Mausers like the 22H built on the same action had a flat top receiver rings with a dovetail scope mounting system, and a more refined safety and bolt shroud, but the earlier ZG-47 had a round top with clip slots if I recall correctly.

By the way, the G33/40 was little more than a modified version of the Czech VZ33 introduced in 1933 (as indicated by the name), with slightly different furniture and German markings after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Third Reich in early 1939. They were all a standard Model 1898 length, with small front receiver ring, small barrel shank, and extensive lightening cuts on the receiver and hollow bolt handle.

Peconga

I thought the ZG 47 was a large ring action whereas the VZ33, G33/40 and the Brno M21/22 were all small ring?

Cheers.

Not sure about historical sporting versions of the G33-40 but there have been very persistent rumors including in some fairly reliable magazines that Granite Mountain Arms should have a modern version out soon.

My trusty 7X57, which accompanied me to Africa in 1974, is built on a G33/40 action, with altered bolt, alloy triggerguard with hinged floorplate, and a Dayton Traister trigger and Buehler safety. It has continued to be my go-to rifle for deer hunting and is a joy to carry and use. It remains to be seen if my BRNO 22F in 6.5X57 will supplant it in my affection.

The Brno ZG 47 is a large ring action. The 21-22 Brno is a small ring action.

I have not looked lately to see if it's still there but Martini & Hagn had a G33/40 action in the white for sale.
