These guys any good to hunt with? In the next couple of years Id like to hunt buffalo, scrub bulls, maybe even a donkey Would like to find a place where I could use a 500mag handgun or a 45/70 double rifle(please dont give me a bunch of shit about my gun choice ). These guys do bow hunts so I thought they might be good.

I've never hunted with them so I can't comment. You won't get a handgun into the country so forget about that. There are a few Aussie guides on this site, they can give you a heads up on the Aussie guiding scene.

Yup, Bakes is right about the non-importation of any handguns. We missed out on hundgun hunting by a year or so. I was almost booking through a handgun customizer guru for one of the hunts and I was too late. Oz dummies had slammed the door to future handgun hunts forever.

Now I could be wrong (most likley are) but handgun hunting was not allowed anyway. I think in the NT you can hunt with a hand gun but there's alot of red tape to go through. Anybody know for sure?

Ross Seyfried has taken his Bowen conversion revolver down under some time ago. Gary Reeder has hunted with his custom conversions there also. He tested all his own revolvers down under before he would sel the conversions to somebody else. J.D. Jones and Lynn Thompson of Magnaport both have been down under for quite a few trips also. Hunting with handguns have been legal down under for a long time before the dummies outlawed it. There are a whole lot of names I can't recall at this moment. With the exception of Seyfried, the rest of the mentioned are gunsmiths who tested out their products both down under and in Africa. I almost went down under with my 475 but they closed the door on me.

Thanks for the info. Too bad about handguns. I got a rifle or 2 I could use. So many places to hunt so little time and $$$$$

Now that I've had a good night's rest, here's another couple of names. Both George C Nonte and Lee Jurras have gone to Africa and Oz back in the 70's. Nonte was a writer who authored several home pistolsmithing articles and books and fair ballistician on top of it all. Lee Jurras put the shooting world on it's ear with his Super-Vel line of cartridges with slightly lighter bullets and higher velocities at +P pressures. Hell, both these guys used to shoot 5 gal buckets at 100 yds with the Colt 1911A1 and S-V 190 gr jhp's going at 1050 f/s.

deant

so putting aside the handgun hunting which I agree too might not be possible - a double 45/70 sounds fine. Should be able to take a buffalo with good bullets and good shooting. What are you interested in hunting? Water buffalo, scrub bull, sambar deer, pigs, other deer ..... ? Let us know your thoughts.

Nitrox
The waterbuff and scrub bulls are top of my list. Pig hunting also is great. Thinking about going on vacation and adding in a 5 to 7 day hunt to that. My boy wants to do a hunt somewhere when he graduates. Ive been to Africa twice Id like to talk him into something different. I think one of the bulls might get him thinking.
