Seeking some help....
      #128808 - 05/03/09 09:45 PM

Hi all

I am new here to the forum. But it is a great forum, so much info to read about all my loved things in life

But, I hope some can help me. I am seeking my first double gun, but what to look for and to stay away from?
I am seeking, dreaming, of a old British or German double, pre WW2. The Germans did make some of, if not the best, guns back then.

But, are they "to" old to use today? When it comes to what cal. I am a bit mad, dreaming of a 475#2 or a 476. Why? "All" got a 470 or 500 and I just like to have one a bit off the main road. Yes, I know it is more easy to go for a 470 or 500, but.....hmmmmm..Guess that is why I use a 9.2*64 on my moose hunting in Norway, a 7*57 on roe deer. I like these old cal.

But, is a used old 470 or 500 easy to find? Made more of them back then? I was thinking of a short 577, but I think the recoil may be a bit heavy for me.

These old cal. 475#2, ,476 and also the short 577 was used on all games in Africa, Asia back then, and are just as good today. That is why I like to bring one back to life, take it to Africa or Australia for what it was made to do...hunt the large animalīs that walk there.

Thanks for looking

Cheers all, Vegard_dino

VD:
I can certainly answer one of your questions:
Quote:

are they "too" old to use today?

Absolutely not!

As with any second-hand firearm purchase, you will need to satisfy yourself that it is sound. If you lack the knowledge, simply get it checked by someone you trust, preferrably someone who knows double rifles.

A scan of the past threads here will quickly show that many of us, perhaps most, prefer the vintage stuff, made at a time when pride of workmanship was of far greater importance than a fiscal 'bottom line'.

...and here's my opinion of the short .577, if you haven't already seen it.

Good luck in your search, and welcome to NE.com!

Hi Marrakai

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I know what you mean. I am using a bolt action from ī

38 myself, love it!
I was more thinking about the action on a db rifle, hard to find parts, the regulation on the barrels and so one.

But, as you say, these guns was made, when work quality was #1 and not the CEOīs car. Just looking at a old gun, is a joy.

Same with old fishing rods, I am using that, a a bamboo rod and a old wooden one. Still do it for me...and gives me dinner to

So, my questions more or less give it to itself.....when I think about it. A old gun is old, but alive and ready.

So, you use the .577 2 3/4 , your gun looks just great! Have you taken her to Africa?

Yes, when I read what you say, a .577 at 10-10.5lbs, is a easy handling gun, and got all the power I need.
I have a magazine about a drilling made now in .577 2 3/4*2 and with a 12 gauge under, it is a very pretty gun.

Hmmm..I think I will look around and se if a "short" .577 is around.......

Have a good day

Welcome aboard Vegard, to our little community of double rifle lovers. And good luck with your search for a rifle in one of the less common Nitro Express calibres. A special welcome to a man who shares the name of one of the greatest Olympians of all time, Vegard Ulvang, who along with fellow Norwegian, Bjorn Daelie, set a new pinnacle for mens' cross-country skiing. Did they ever find any trace of his brother?

Hello and thanks!

A very nice and friendly forum it is
Hehe, well, I seek the more odd things in lufe...old wooden fishing rods, bamboo to, old guns and not so popular calibres today. But, I like it.

So, that is why I seek the same in a DB to , all do some say I act like a kid when doing so...why not go for the more practical 470 or 500??? But, that whatīs so nice, we do not all have to be A4.
So, you know Ulvang and Dælie? Well, know, I mean, renember them. Long time ago now, when the two of them where at the top. Regarding his brother, Vegardīs, yes they did. A very sad story it was.

Have a good day all
