With regards to 8-bores

What do single barrel rifles/paradox/ball and shot guns fetch? They seem to be rare, is this presumption correct?

Thanks

Ben

Hey Ben.

All bore-rifles regarding doubles or singleshots are just rare, and they don`t become easier to find as time pushes foreward. The "bore"rifles have over the years attracted collectors because of the "hole" + they represent history of a the India/africa glamour period, when one could pioneer "uncharted" lands. Today if I wanted a pre-war double in nitrocaliber, I could get one tomorrow in any quality I can afford, but to find a bore-calibered rifle in high quality is much more difficult, because they are old(surviving rate small), they were used hard + rebored to smooth barreled + I don`t think that many were made as the doublebarreled counterpart....The ratio might look like 1 singleshot borerifle: 100 double borerifles...maybe even higher. Most of the really fine guns are among high-dollar collectors and seldom appear for public sale/auctions, before the collectors are dead, and the widow sales it for candy...haha. 90% of what is found on the internet and autions today on these borerifles are wornout, pitted, rusted and is circulated amongst the newbies to the gunworld, who has read about them once.

8's are rare but they are around. There would be a price range to talk about but each gun could command more or less money depending on the merits of each gun. Ball guns might command less but probably shouldn't. The big 8s (brass case guns) are extremely powerful, unique to themselves and rare. A Holland paradox 8; only maybe 70 or less made with maybe 30, 40 or 50 survivors in various states of condition. You certainly wouldn't be undergunned for anything.

I was thinking doubles on the Holland paradoxes; I have never seen a Holland single 8 paradox rifled gun.

I agree they rare, but on the other hand 8-bores were much more common working rifles than 4s, 600Ns, even full up 577s.

Bland 8-bore single

This is a great looking rifle, and I love the case and original accessories, but the price is a "BIT" over the top for the current market, unless I'm just totally out of touch. I'd love to have it, but my opinion is more 15-23k at the outside, and only because of the extras. Am I way off base? The J. Just paradox pictured above was on gunbroker at $4500 with no takers for quite some time about 2 years ago.

Bob

Theres a couple 8-bore doubles at the upcoming Holt's auction.
A Tolley discussed elsewhere on the forum here and a Rogers rock & Co. which doesn't have a picture yet.

Wow nice gun.......from the description that is.

Thanks I didnt see that one there. The Tolley isnt a rifle....

I bet it will go for 7,000 pounds. Never seen an 8-bore double go for little.

Who in Dickens are Rogers rock and co???

Ben
