I've heard of Kik powder but never used it and usually it was noted on my ML forum as being sub-standard to GOEX by those who have used it. Low velocity and dirty as well.

18.5 is heavy for pressure if that's what that means in front of the nitro proof - same as most .303's isn't it? Wow, heavy indeed. 65mm to me means a 2 5/8" case?

18,5 mm is european for 12 bore i think

65 mm is 2,5" case lenght

then comes the english nitro proof but it stands alone which i think is a major NO NO

i cant find head or tail in this.

best regards

peter

My 16 bore is marked 65mm - and it measures 2 5/8" exactly for the chambers - which is why I mentioned that length above. I don't have a conversion chart nor a metric/imperial ruler to verify.

18.5 is a .728 12 bore.
It must have been re-proved under the newer rules that require a metric designation.

Daryl, I'm back home now and had a chance to refer to my load book.

In my 10 with a RB, 135 grains of FFFg gave 3.5" groups in plastic Federal cases and 2" (all crossing) at 50 yards in brass, both with a single .125" over powder card and .5" fiber wad.

By going to 138 grains and adding two over powder cards and a slight crimp to the plastic case, the group closed to 2" and velocity averaged 1285fps.

Looking at my data, 135gn FFg with one card and a slight crimp crossed 10.5" at 30 yards! That's probably why the rifle was priced the way it was! Increasing from 130 grain of Goex Cartridge up to 170 grains only gave an increase of 110fps, I think due to the inability to fit a sufficient sealing wad column in a 2 5/8" case. Even with smokeless loads I get a stray round that is much slower than average every now and again that I blame on using fiber wads. I'm convinced that lubed felt wads are vastly superior to anything else when it comes to this (you can easily tell if there has been any blow by), and plan to retest my blue dot loads to see if the flyers reoccur.

Question;

Was this gun ever black powder at all????

Shouldnt there be a 'bp' with a crown?

Also, to say 65mm means what?? That they reduced the original chamber length of 2 5/8?! Surely this was made in the smokeless era, beginning of. Around 1905??? could it be?

Some like myself love hammer guns! and old cartridges! Maybe it was made for someone with taste?

Ben

ben

this were most likely a blackpowder gun, as it is a damascus barreled gun.

it has been reproofed or something but the original stamps looks like it has been filed off.

best

Thanks for the conversion table - 65 = 2.56" rounded to 100'ths. Mine are merely bored 1/10" deeper, I guess, at 66.7mm. NP.

Bob- thanks for the load data. Wad columns and crimping are so very important to the regulation. they make more change than does a powder charge change. I've wondered why my 12 bore double regulated with so many loads - smokeless and BP - strange beasts they are. I used mostly folded crimps with plastic cases.

In a 2 3/4" case, with folded crimp, I used both 150gr.(5 1/2 drams) and 192gr.(7 drams) and got parallel regulation wiht both loads. The lighter charge needed a fibre wad to take up space between crad and cup wad while the 192gr. load only used the cup under the ball and 1 or 2 cards on the powder.

Sorry for getting off topic.
