The Dougall Lockfast - A Forgotten but Interesting Design
      #127253 - 16/02/09 12:21 PM

Not sure if the Dougall Lockfast has been discussed here before. David MAcKay Brown talks about its immense strength on his website and WW Greener bashes it in his The Gun and its Development which can be accessed from our Books forum. I just thought that it would be nice to hear what the experts here have to say about this very interesting old design.

One more Lockfast gun in a US collection can be seen here.

Anyone here have one? Thanks in advance for any information and good hunting!

Don't see rifles very often in Australia, but Dougall shotguns turn up every now and then. One member of our local collectors club has several, and brings one along to our meetings every now and then.

I particularly liked the article in DGJ by Seyfried a few years ago, describing a Dougall 'Lock-Fast' SxS howdah pistol. Marvellous thing!

Interesting concept. In fact, if it weren't for the name, I'd say the design was from the very innovative French in origin and a blend between the Jones lever and the sliding Darne action. I'm sure it works, but I'd rather the bolting mechanism slide back and forth rather than the barrels. It also makes me nervous that the fences also contain the locking bosses.

Some designs are "forgotten" for a reason!

Aghhhhh Mehul! Dont mention Dougall or lockfast around me!!!!!!!!!!

Greatest mistake I ever made........I missed her.

1998, gunmart uk magazine, empiregunsight of Peter Frost(who I bought my Rigby from) 'double barrel express elephant rifle in .500 express, by Dougall with lockfast action, and high relief engraving of elephants and buffalos on the action, a-1 condition with original leather motorcase' 2,500 pounds.

I asked him who he sold it to, says he doesnt remember......perhaps I will put a 'wanted dead or alive' ad in my home county and the next one up-Devon-where Pete is.

Marrakai,

Thanks for responding. Please do post any pictures that you may have the opportunity to take in the future or invite your friends who own Lockfast guns to please do so. Thanks.

Jerry,

The sheer strength of the Lockfast action is something that several writers at the time acknowledged. My guess is that the action was more forgotten because of its cost and its appearance with the unusual sidelever opening mechanism than anything else. But I am always happy to defer to experts who know better.

Ben,

That must hurt! Whoever ended up buying the rifle must be one lucky man!

Good hunting, gentlemen!

In the spring of 2005 Monty Whitley had a really nice Dougall Lockfast 12 bore shotgun with two sets of damascus barrels. All was highest quality and in really great shape. I had the pleasure to handle that gun several times, and I considered buying it. In the end, I just ripped off the photos, which I will now share:

The description at that time:

12 bore, 30" damascus steel barrels. Set one choked .006" in both. Set two choked .022" in both. Both barrels and action marked "HIGHEST QUALITY". Checkered splinter forend, pistol grip buttstock measuring 14 1/4" with heel & toe plates. In beautiful original condition with the action retaining much of the original casehardened colors. Both sets of barrels have 90-95% original brown damascus color and pattern. The triggerguard bow has most of the charcoal blue with the lower strap starting to silver. Magnificent wood. Perfect bores that measure .732" both sets.

Yes Mehul old friend, I never got over that mistake........I bought a Jaguar instead in the end and though she was lovely......the rifle would have been the sweeter purchase.

Regards

Ben

A very interesting design indeed.

There is a fine example of a Dougall lockfast .500 double rifle in the Julia auction on the 16th of march www.juliaauctions.com firearms division. good photos showing locking bosses and lump extension that slides into standing breech. A neat system, but a bit cumbersome. Hard to make it "snap".

All the best, SXS
