S-Ball Plastik in the Double Slugger
      #126661 - 11/02/09 02:58 PM

Many years ago, before the brucellosis and tuberculosis eradication (BTEC) shoot-out, stray buffalo regularly wandered into mango plantations and small rural blocks around the outskirts of Darwin, capital city of Australia's Northern Territory. Large-bore centrefire rifles were not really a safe proposition due to the relative closeness of neighbours, so the usual 'medicine' was either Brenneke slugs or S&B 'S-Ball Plastik' from the 12-gauge. The latter were also favoured by law enforcement due to their effectiveness on car doors and alloy engine-blocks!

Unfortunately our importers don't seem to want to bring any decent solid slug-cartridges into the country any more, offering only Foster-style hollow slugs that are ineffective on large animals.

Some time ago I tested some S-Ball in my double-slugger, but didn't report the highly variable results at the time as I thought the powder must have begun to deteriorate, and I only had one packet.

Here's what happened:
Four shots over the chrono were R1=1193fps; L1=1350fps; R2=1223fps; L2=1324fps. Vertical dispersion at 25 metres was around 4 1/2 inches. There was noticeable difference in felt recoil between shots, the first shot seeming like a .22 rimfire! A fair amount of partially-burnt powder remained in the barrels after shooting. As far as I know the test cartridges were 'new' in about 1996 and had been stored in an air-conditioned building ever since. They are paper hulls, however. The slugs themselves are solid brass or bronze affairs, fully enclosed in a non-discarding plastic sabot integral with a large plastic base-wad.
I was surprised at these results because the slugs had a very good reputation back in the 'buffalo days'.

Anyway, my friend has passed me another box of S-Balls to test, so I will send a few more over the chrono when the weather permits and report back here. Perhaps the earlier test was on a bad batch. Also, I intend to mic everything and check slug and sabot diameter relative to the bore dimensions. Perhaps the base-wad is not expanding consistently to seal the bore. Maybe the plastic has 'hardened' over time? Many questions to explore: stay tuned!

Meanwhile, any of our Northern Hemisphere colleagues shooting the S-Ball Plastik? Any results to compare? Do Sellier & Bellot still offer this load?

Some time S-Ball was only one slug offered in Czechoslovakia. Primary it was designed for battue game. Plastic sabot allowed firing it form fully choked bores. Sellier Bellot stopped the production of S-Ball plastik more than 10 years ago because of prohibition steel core bullets. Probably it was few years produced with brass core too but original S Balls is steel.. 16 bore bullet weight 18 grams and 12 bore 24,6 grams. Length of cartridge was only one 65 mm it fit 70 mm chambers too.
I am surprised that it was used for buffalo shooting.
In Czech Republic are rumors that sometimes S-Balls ricochet from wild boars shoulder.
But I have no personal experience with hunting. I fired it from my 16/16 SxS on shooting range only.

Straight WW balls (hardened if you want), just under calibre - say a .725" in a 12 bore with the cup of a trap-wad underneath to keep it centered - another cup-down on the powder with whatever wad is needed inbetween to get proper crimp height - roll or folded criimp - I used folded crimp with plastic cases. Work on the loads - I got excellent accuracy to 100 yards - 8" -10". 3" at 50 yards going 1,500fps for a 575gr. ball. They'll outpenetrate most of the slugs available, including Brenneke's, yet disrupt as much or more material in-path, shattering bones instead of bouncing off them. Some guys even get doubles to regulate - but you've got to move the balls. Can easily be more easily loaded with black powder. The normal 12 bore loads ran 110gr., 150gr. and 191gr. (4, 5.5 and 7 drams- Greener)

Of course, this is for someone who wants to load. Can be done easily with a hand set of Lee Loader Tools and a hammer or more equipment - but not much is needed. Word of caution- alwasy use 1 or 2 hard card wads between black powder and any plastic wads. Straight plastics, with integral base wads are easily cleaned of BP fouling - any paper very much less so.

7Drams:
Thank you very much for the update on the S-ball.
I will relegate the remaining slugs to the cartridge collection!

Welcome to NE.com by the way. Is there still plenty of hunting available in the Czech republic?

...and thanks for the usual recommendation, Daryl.
I promise to give RBs another run when I get time!

Marrakai:
Yes it is mostly wild boars, roebuck and small game.

I am occasional hunter, but I would like to try my new J. Lang 12 bore rifle with 7drams charge.
Can I ask how I can put photos of my guns and rifles on this web? Thanks

There are probably directions on how to do this somewhere here.

Easiest is to choose a hosting site like photobucket.com, then upload pictures to that site from your computer. Then, move your cursor onto the picture, then down, highlight the url (left click) and copy (right click - copy) the url and paste it in your post here. Fairly simple.
