Tragic and amazing stuff.

We have fought our share of fire and my son fought fire for the US Forest Service and is signed up to do it again this year.

We do wish you the best and hope all the culprits are caught and a lesson is taught with them.

So many fires within an easy drive of Melbourne. So much bushland to the East without a major population centre without fires. You've got to wonder how many were deliberately lit.

Seymour is the Australian home for its Armoured Corp. ie Poor country only fit for the army. Lots of bush. lots of eucalyptus and pine which thrives in poor soil here.

The speed of the fire can be suprising. The fastest I have seen personaly covered a measured mile of road in just under 1 minute, making something better than 60 miles an hour, in the crowns of a pine plantation. One of the problems we face is that the intense heat carries leaves from the eucalypts high into the air and drops them still alight or smouldering well ahead of the fire. I have been burned by leaves droping at least 15 miles ahead of fires, and they start multiple new fires well ahead of the main blaze, giving the impresion that the fire you were watching in the distance is suddenly upon you.

When I was in the army one of the things that caused a lot of disatisfaction at the digger level (troops) was the failure of the authorities to use us for disasters such as this. That problem related to our system of government, where the fire fighting authority needed to aproach the state government, who discussed it then went to the federal government, who discussed it and went to the army, who determined what they could do and reported back to the feds, who discussed it and made an offer to the state, who discussed it and took the offer back to the firefighting agency, which accepted or asked for something else, and the processs went back and forth repeatedly.
Our constitution was developed by governments for governments, and aimed to protect the rights of the various levels of government under the comonwealth model, and we have nothing like the US FEMA who can take control.
Seing the speed with which troops and equipment were deployed this time makes me hope a change is in the air.

In some past fires we have also seen some petty public service empire builders try to do it alone, without seeking help until it is too late, but hopefully those days are gone.

Sky News are just reporting they've arrested two people for arson related to these fires.

How they catch them so quickly or prove who set a fire, I simply don't know, but if they're guilty, I reckon they deserve a suspended sentence at least........ that is suspended by the neck until dead!

Cancel that chaps........ Sky News are now reporting they've been released without charge and that they were just being investigated for suspicious activity....... whatever the hell that means!

My heart and thoughts with all of You. Especially with the ones who lost relatives or their belongings.

On the TV, it's really frightful.

'The Age' poster just across my desk says they have got a guy for arson, so maybe it's another one. The worst possibility in all this is one I won't/can't even mention here but you may have heard about it already.

Just seen the same thing on Sky News. Assuming he's the culprit, and no matter why he did it, he deserves that suspended sentence I mentioned!

Already being reported that the guy arrested for the "Churchill" fires (right name?) is fragile, a loner, mentally unstable etc etc. Twenty people died in that bushfire.

Already setting him up for a soft sentence the bastards.

As if anyone starting bushfires is in their right mind!?

Bring back capital punishment with death being a sentence for someone intentionally starting a bushfire where someone is killed. Whether mentally stable or not.

Sky news are carrying the same story now and as John says, seem to be giving him a symaphetic presentation. Let's hope the jury feel otherwise!

My oldest son and his team of 35 power transmission erectors(linesmen) left West Aussie on friday in convoy for Victoria.
They arrived today and at the moment are camped at Dandenong.
So if any of you fella's in Vic see some trucks or equipment with OUTBACK POWER written on them say g'day.
They recon they will have at least 3 months work building and replacing power poles, lines and transformers ect
