The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 12,000 kilograms (26,000 lb),with a shoulder height of 4.2 metes (14 ft), a metre (yard) taller than the average male African elephant

I would never dare to question the figures but I just wonder how a 12 ton elephant could be weighed in the field ? And what kind of scale did they use ? Sounds like a helluva job for the staff.

My thoughts too...
May as well been using an AK. The elephant should not have lasted that long hit in the "vitals" - Oh, I guess intestines are vital too...

Bloody hell what a useless shot.........I am nothing to shout about sure but I was expecting some sort of brain shot or something to have brought him down.

Oh well

Chaps......

Best caliber known for putting down a bull elephant???

That is most successful rather than cheapest/most commonly used! Without wishing to seem contradictory though!

I see hunters use the .375 H&H but the ph uses a 500 nitro.

I think as this article amply demonstrates, if you can't shoot then it doesent matter if you use a 18" howitzer.

Amen Bramble, I remember in his book, Lou Hallamore had a client arrive and he couldn't hit a thing with his .375 but "could drive tacks" with his .270 Winchester. He told the client to use the .270,
where to put the bullet, Lion grunted and rolled over. As Hallamore said, "Would it be better if the client shoots him through the heart with a .270 or in the arse with a .375 ??" best, Mike

Couldn't agree more--which has been my feelings on several threads previously--bullet placement is MUCH more critical than caliber..IMHO..

whats interesting is there are still elephants that size roaming around Wankie NP in Zimbabwe.
after four moves in the past six years and a burglary, i'm unable to find pictures i took there in '99 and '02 or '03. had one close-up of a bull easily that size.
i've also seen some monsters in Kazuma Pan NP, Pandamatenga, Chobe and the bush south of there.
that entire area is still well known for huge bodied elephant.

Per the PH's I have visited with, the ele are much larger in that area..southern Zim and into Botswana..in several books I have read it discusses that as well..

Lynn, one of the PH's in my camp last year who has hunted that area stated he suggested mv to be in the 2300 fps or better as to penetrate the skull from any angle on those larger bulls..Ian Gibson, Ivan Carter and Boddington have all stated the same thing..said those bulls can run as much as 20% larger...

I was there in '04 and '05--the bulls around the Gonarezhou park area are huge in body size..

Last time I traveled through Wankie, I felt quite small in our 4x4 with a couple of those bulls quite close..

Bullet placement indeed......

And if you can place as well with any caliber, what then?(within reason, not known eye dislocators!)

Ben

Tanz and Moz Ele aren't all that big bodied except for a few up in the populated Masai area.
