Leopard Attack in Chewore
      #125963 - 06/02/09 06:54 AM

Ian Gibson of Chifuti Safaris was at my house for the past week..he had some pretty interesting stories from the previous season..one of the more interesting was about the leopard wounded by a client...He and another PH went in after it the next morning..it attacked his friend..who was momentarily able to shove the gun into the leopard's mouth...the attached photos show what happened...the leopards bite split the stock..along with, if you look closely by the gunsite, actually put a dent into the metal of the gun barrel...The leopard was shot off of the other PH by Ian ----Ian stated, after all was over and they sat around that night, he bite onto the stock as hard as he could..it only put a tiny dot on the wood, he said about the size of a ball point pen...again reveals the incredible power in their jaws...

The PH survived..but did get chewed on a bit...

Sorry for the poor photo quality--

Ripp

Whoa!

People seldom realize how dangerous it is to hunt cats, there so fast and dont act very nice when wounded.

It's funny, but I read on another forum where someone was justifying, with strong arguments, that a TAZER gun, the kind that shoots multiple highly charged devices, can be more effective in stopping a charge!!!

It would be interesting to watch, but I wouldn't be the first one to try it!

I have a Stock and fore end from a Holland double rifle that
has claw and teeth marks in it.

Can't remember the owners name but he was well known.

From the looks of it, he probably tasted pretty good too

I'd say that fellow is pretty lucky! I didnt see any while I was in the valley, but tracks were abundant and we heard them close to camp each night. We were in a bush camp near the chewore river bridge close to Sapi. Quite remote.

Last summer we heard them as well every night as well--we hunted them a bit after we got the lion..was fortunate enough to see 7 while there including the one I eventually shot..the final 2 were actually during late morning of the final day..saw a cub come running across the road..mother was sitting in the bush looking at us..we got her on video..she was less than 60 yards from us..pretty cool..

As to the taser...good luck with that one. ..was in S Africa once and they had one in a pen with about a 25 ft run...when I peaked in he saw my friend on the other end..the leopard flew out of the pen and was against the fence so fast..if he had had a gun, I am not sure he could have gotten off a shot..fastest charge I have ever seen...after that, I have a huge amount of respect for them..if there ever was a case for a double..that is one...
