Title seemed appropriate being in that I live in the Town of Buffalo, Wyoming

Rancher friends of ours raise Buffalo and from time to time "hunt" them. I had always wanted to harvest one, knowing there is not a lot of sport or cunning involved with the process. This past summer we did some work for them in exchange for a Buffalo. I knew it was getting about time to make it happen and was thinking it would be time to have a rifle ready. A few days ago I got a very urgent call stating it was time. The bull they had been watching for me and another had become quite the rogues and where raising havoc on the ranch. The final straw was breaking into the bred Angus heifer pasture and killed one. They managed to kill one of the bulls but the other had taken a yearling buffalo bull as an askari and was very wild. I arrived and the hunt was set in motion. I was told to shoot "my" bull how ever I wanted and then to "brain" the calf that they hoped would hang with him when he went down. This calf had went native over the summer and they assumed it would follow in its olders Rogue ways.

I had been forewarned that they where quite cagey and would not stick around if the spotted us. I am a fair stalker so thought no real big deal. I wanted to use my 458wm, but after hearing of the prior days events I decided to take a newly aquired 338 along. Good thing. We found them fairly quick and the stalk was easy enough. Really just involved keeping out of sight and getting to a vantage point to see thru/over the brush. 2 shots from the 458 with old style Barnes 400gr X- bullets and he was "in the bag". The first shot missed the spine at the withers by an inch we later found and then a coup de' grace to the head/neck junction. The calf milled around but didn't present a decent shoot. I rushed it and missed a hard quartering away side/rear head shoot. The game was afoot then. 1/2 hour later we where positioned at a interception spot at a headgate on the irrigation ditch. Just before things where to happen he spotted me and started moving along a fence row. I was in a decent postion with the 338 at the ready. He stopped at a hole in the fence, about 200yds distance giving me a split second to brain him.

Great story, my friend...great story indeed! The American Bison can be a very deadly animal if pushed and if it decides it wants to be. Taking one with a .458 Win. Mag and the other with a .338 Win. Mag. is simply classic. Two American dangerous/big game calibers used in hunting the biggest animal in North America and wearing your Selous boots from Westley Richards; what can be better than that?!!

Which ranch was it? I've shot buffalo on the RBL Ranch years ago when the market was at rock bottom and they were trying to thin their herds. Fun Stuff and good eating.

A friend won a buffalo hunt in a raffle recently. He gave us some meat and I made chili from some hamburger yesterday. It was great. Suddenly the wife is more interested in buying a buffalo. I suppose I shouldn't disappoint her.

CS, these are the remnants of the of RBL herd. Roeblings have went to raising rodeo stock and this ranch, Zezas Brothers, bought up there herd years ago. They have added a bunch since then and have a nice size sustainable herd going, maybe 200 head or more.

I stopped at Zezas (spelling ???) in October 2008 while I was antelope and Mule deer hunting. They are just east of interstate 25 south of Buffalo. Nice people. They were bringing a bison out on the back of a truck. It had hydrolic arms to list it. Pretty cool looking.

That is the right place. Where did you hunt? The "arms" on the truck and for round bale hay bales. Works well for Buffalo, 4-wheelers, trash bins oh' and round bales.

We stayed at Mike Leichman's place at the mouth of Crazy Woman Canyon. Hunted public land mostly.
Was able to get access to some public land through private land just south of Buffalo by a gravel pit. We Got 2 Antelope there. 1 down on Trabing road and 1 on private land.

I passed a small Mule deer down on Trabing, Then a winter storm blew in and we didn't have much luck after that. We were 0 for 4 on Mulies. Loved hunting out there thoughand the Big Horns are beautiful.

I think I met you guys, I remember a truck load of hunters with NY tags. I like area 22 for Pronghorn.

Caprivi, We actually flew into Rapid City and had a rental(jeep). Still possible we met though. We made the rounds looking for places to hunt. Spent a lot of time in the "Sports lure"

Cool, this a wonderful corner of the world, best i have been. "Sports Lure" is great store for such a small town. There is a Henry Atkin 12ga SLNE in there right now.

I lived all over Wyoming for about 20 years, we sold our property outside of Thermopolis last year. I get back to Wyoming at least once a year, my wife was born and raised in Wyoming and as far as I can tell she is related to almost everybody. HAHA. Back when the market fell out from under buffalo, I "hunted"(using the term loosely) RBL two years in a row, the first year I took a young bull, which I had English mounted and the hide tanned, they hang in my living room. The second year I went back just for the meat and shot a 5 year old cow. Both were very good eating and at the time they were cheaper than beef. He used to joke that RBL stood for the "Really Bad Luck" ranch.

Caprivi, when I was at Zeza's, I met Nick, and an older gentleman I think was his father. There was also another person there who is a police officer in Buffalo. Was that you ??? If not, do you know who that is? One of the guys with me is a police officer in Rochester and wants to send him an RPD patch. One of those Cop things.
Sports lure had a Kimber Select in 7mm-08 that I stared at for several days. Way to nice a gun for the likes of me. I am one of those SS with synthetic or laminate stock guys.
I really loved it in Wyoming. My wife was worried that I wouldn't return.

Nick is the middle son, The older fellow you met was indeed Dad, John. The Cop was not me that is Adrian a son-in-law of John.

I nearly bought the Select for my daughter but we are more .260 fans. I too am rough on equipment and the stainless/plastic things make the most sense.

My wife and I both didn't return one time, been here since.

Had a similar situation a few years ago in N Dakota--a former classmate of mine had a 15 year old bull that decided he wanted to be on his own..busted out of the fences..when my friend attempted to chase him back in the buff decided to get a bit aggressive on the F-250 Ford..severely damaged 2 sides...got a call from my friend if I wanted a chance to whack him with my bow..went back and found him feeding by some bales left in the fields..was able to get an arrow into him..he ran a bit and stopped..layed down punching the arrow all the way in..was finally able to sneak closer as he layed by some willows..got another arrow into him..he ran a bit and tipped over..

Have to say, ever since, my family and I have purchased bison meat every winter..very good and lower in fat...
