Other nearby towns are Shelby, 35 miles, Conrad 50 miles and Valier 25 miles. Valier may have some bed and breakfast but no motels.

Here is a Google Map to the Range. The range doesn't look like that now, and won't look like it does now in June.

DoubleD:
What a fun match. This would be a blast.
Hope you have a great turnout.
I was already lining up a battery of arms that I would use!
Let's see.
I have MH in .375 express, a couple of nice SMLE #1 MkIII's, the Webleys of course, and OH!, the Sporter MH in .577/.450! Oh, and the rook caliber? Could I use the MH Cadet in .310?

Queen Victoria's Army's never carried SMLE's but early Webley's and the Martini's as well as Long Lee's would be fine.

Martini Henry in Cadet .310? Bring it. If you mean a BSA .310 Cadet, the Rook and Rabbit event has this rifle in mind. In fact if you do have a Martini Henry in .310 you can still shoot it in the Rook and Rabbit. We are also going to allow the .310 Cadet in Provincial Match. Everyone who shoot's in the Provinvial will be awarded a Provincial shooting Medal.

I should mention, this is not a competition. It is a gathering of collector/shooters out to exercise these old guns.

Thanks. Guess I just associate the .303 with the SMLEs more, but do realize there where others. I also have a Snyder .577. Any room for these in the gathering!!!

Webley WG.....455.....69
Broomhandle Mauser.....9mm.....69
Webley WG.....455.....63
Broomhandle Mauser.....9mm.....58

Lessons learned.

The Montana match date was selected purposely for weekend following the Alberta Shoot. The reasoning that shooters would be able to make the long trip to the area attend two shoots and tour the area. Only one shooter took advantage off that idea. In reality having back to back shoots probably made it more difficult for those in the area to attend. Next year if there is a Montana shoot...that's a big if, it will not be a back to back. Most likely it will be in August. That will give us a breather between matches.

Looks Like Great Stuff DD. What fun! Wish there was a practical way to participate. Just not enough time for such a trip. I would love to shoot MH's, Webleys, Broomhandle and such that I have all in the same game!
Nice country there. If it had been a South Texas shoot the temps would have been over 100 degrees that weekend!

I don't understand the point scores by the rifle and handgun scenarios. What does this relate to?
What distances did they shoot and how do you work the Gopher match?

Full Explanation of the Victorian rifleman Provinvial match is found here.

http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/8131

It should be said that in our shoots this is not a competition. It is a measure of performance of the rifle. Scores are kept, but shooters names are not. Best score for 10 rounds would be 100.

The Victorian Rifleman Provincial Match

THE BASIC PROVINCIAL MATCH

13 rounds at 100 yards fired on the 50 meter UIT Slow fire Pistol Target B-17 in 30 minutes. Best ten hits count. Any position, sling may be used. No rests. Use any rifle of a type as originally used by Queen Victorias Armies during her reign using black powder. .303/7 x57 may only be shot with Smokeless powder. Cadet Martini’s in 297/230 and .310 may be shot in this match

Provincial Match Variations- Rifle Matches
Muzzleloading rifle
Snider
Martini Henry
.303/7x57
Cadet

Each rifle can be fired as an individual match. Martini .303s and Lee .303s compete equally together.

Specialty Matches
100 Yard off Hand

13 rounds at 100 yards fired in 30 minutes on the 50 meter UIT Slow fire Pistol Target B-17. Best ten hits count. Standing Off hand, sling may be used

3 Position match

5 rounds off-hand 25 yards
5 Rounds kneeling 50 yards
5 rounds prone 100 yards
Sling maybe used
All rounds score
10 Minutes to fire per position

Mad Minute

As many rounds as can be fired in one minute. All rifles start unloaded and may only be single loaded. No charging magazines, no use of stripper clips. All rounds score, any position, slings may be used.

Aggregate Matches.
One rifle match plus any two or more specialty matches, one of which must be the Mad Minute. Same rifle must be shot in each match.

THE BASIC PROVINCIAL HANDGUN MATCH

13 rounds at 25 yards fired in 30 minutes on the 50 meter UIT Slow fire Pistol Target B-17. Best ten hits count. Standing upright one handed like a proper gentleman. No rests. Use any Handgun of a type as originally used by Queen Victorias Armies during her reign.

Provincial Match Variations- Handgun
Muzzleloading Handgun-Blackpowder only
Blackpowder Cartridge Handgun using Blackpowder only
Cartridge Handgun using smokeless powder only.

Each handgun type fired as an individual match. Cartridge Revolvers and semi automatics compete equally.

Interpretations.
All matches will be shot in the Spirit of the Victorian Era. Rules shall have meanings as would have been interpreted by the late Sir Harry Paget Flashman, Brigadier-General V.C. K.C.B., K.C.I.E.

The Gopher Match was the Rook and Rabbit match for rook rifles. Only problem was that the fellow that was making and bringing the rook and rabbit targets was involved in a serious accident and was unable to deliver the targets, so we used these iron gophers.

I took the lawn mower and pushed it out across the prairie making a path from the side of the 50 yard target lane about 75 yards long. Then I walked down the lane aways, then walked a ways out in the knee high grass and cleared a spot in the grass with the weed whacker and set a gopher in the small clearing. I had 11 targets. 10 of the targets were place out in grass from pretty close to pretty far. 10 to 50 yards or so.

To shot the course the shooter started at the firing line and got three shoots at an Iron gopher sitting onthe 50 yard target stand. If they hit the gopher with the first or second shoot they rest were saved shoots and could be used later. After firing at teh first gopher the shooter started down the path lookinf for gopher to shoot. They got one shot at each gopher as the went along. If they had a saved round from the first gopher they could shoot a second or third shot. Otherwise one shot per gopher. If they hit the gopher it went flying.

The shooter had ten minutes to cover the course.

Here's the results;

BSA 4A .310 Cadet 8 hits
BSA 4A .310 Cadet 4 hits
DAW Martini .360 #5 3 hits
BSA 4A .310 Cadet 3 hits
DAW Martini .360 #5 2 hits

I had several other back up matches schedule that we didn't use.

One was a variation of the Australia's Big Game rifle Club's Haley's Hop that was I going to call impi.

I have six of these targets.

Two targets at 50 yards, two targets at 25 yards, and two targets at 10 yards, fire 6 rounds. At the signal, fire one shot at each target starting at 50 yards. 5 points for a knock down. Divide score into total time to fire all 6 shots. Weather and time didn't let us get to this match.

I also was going to do a match that only my target maker and I knew about with assegais.

Thanks DD. Very good stuff. I lke the targets. The gophers look like a challange.
A timed shoot as you discribed would have been a hoot.
There is an occasional "african big game" rifle shoot here in Houston once in a while. They shoot .375 HH or larger at multiple targets under time as you discribe. They also have a charging buff that comes at you.
I need to get time to load up the MH's and do some practice.
Best regards.
