wall thickness of doublerifle chambers

Doublerifles are exciting, and In trying to establish a guidingline from where blackpowderguns and the smokeless counterpart really diviate I think it could be interesting to all forummembers to measure their doubles chamberwalls and put it here(Please). My 10bore 3.25" Manton has a wallthickness of ca 6.6mm or .260".

8mm by Double Rifle Webley & Scott 577NE 3" regulated for 750gr. bullet and 90gr. of Cordite.

Great idea; please clearly state if a black powder or nitro rifle, and how far forward from standing breech the measurement was taken, because some cartridges are tapered.

I thought so too....and especially to those who wants to built/convert doublerifles.

I measured mine right at the facing breech. My rifle is a straight wall blackpowder cartridge.

Measurements taken approx. 1/8" in front of rim cut. (.040 rim)

450 Express (BP) 3 1/4" Thickness .218", T.C. Martin, underlever, hammers

450 Nitro Express 3 1/4" Thickness .295", T. Bland, boxlock, toplever
(70gr Cordite, 480 ball)

Am I right in thinking the heavy reinforces in double rifles help concentrate weight between the hands and help the barrels fit shotgun-derived action sizes? I read once that Julian Hatcher turned down the barrel of a .30 Springfield until only about 1/16th inch of metal remained over the chamber. He then fired it continually until, tiring of the exercise, he blew the side out with a 50%-overload proof round.

I think this is an excellent idea and it should give builders an idea of how thick the different
caliber barrels should be made at the breech end. Another thing that would be helpfull is to take around eight measurements at one inch intervals from the breach face. That would give a real idea about the tapering involved with a muzzle diameter measurement thrown in for good measure. No pun intended. Bob H.
