Epidemic decimating wildebeest

Yesterday I had a chat with a friend anxious to know why last year he saw so many bleached skeletons of wildebeest in Tanzania.

What is really puzzling is why only the wildebeest.
The dreadful anthrax and rinderpest couldn't be the cause. They are far too serious to be ignored.

A disease striking the wildebeest is likely to strike other bovideas like antelopes and buffalo.
Why only the wildebeest?

Has anyone a hint?

Jean,

Do you know what sort of numbers, where and were they all in one location or were they scattered over large area(s) etc?

You'd know a lot more about it than I would, but like you, I'd have thought if a disease killed wildebeest, it would also kill other species.

If it was a lot of wildebeest in one area, perhaps it was a herd of rampaging giraffe had rounded up an entire herd and had a feast.......

Ah maybe not, if it were that, the skulls would all be up in the trees!

I was having a conversation with a friend today and this thread came to mind.......... I wonder if it's something similar to the sable in Tuli Block?

Before the 1960s, the Tuli had good sable populations and then they all died out. There's been numerous attempts at reintroductions and all have failed and although the one wanders in, they never survive for long at all....... and no-one seems to know what the reason is.

I wonder if this might be a similar thing?
