Hi i have tested a variety of 410 gauge slugs in my M6 22 lr/410 combination gun. i can get get very decent groups up to 40 meter range with slugs from rem , win , federal all 5 shots 3-4 inches best accuracy from remington and worst from federal. but federal 1/4 ounce slugs penetrate nearly twice as rem 1/5 ounce slugs. my question is what these slugs could realy be good for in survival or hunting big game condition or defens against predators? cheers daniel

If you want serious performance from a 410, Hoening makes slugs that provide almost 45-70 performance. http://www.hoeningbigboresouth.com/HBBS%20410%20Slug%20Ammo.html
They should handle most any defense or hunting chore in North America.

Daniel,
When my son was six I let him start hunting with a 410 and when they had the youth hunts for deer I just switch out with slugs. He took three does with it before he went to a bigger gun and while his shots were under 50yds. none of the deer went past 100yds. I actually tried the m6 for him but the recoil was a lot greater or seemed to be than a polkstock and he got afraid of it. Anyhow, I wouldn't mind having a couple of slugs with the shot shells in my kit.

I'm amazed they shot so well - bravo! If the Fed slugs shoot as well as the lighter ones, I'd use them only. What choke is on the gun, please?

I bought a few boxes of .410 SGs years ago when my youngest daughter was carrying the little shottie afield. They were modern plastic 2 1/2-inch shells, each containing three SG pellets in a vertical stack. Patterns were only a couple of inches at about 15 yds and maybe hand-sized at 25 yds, probably a useful home defence load but not much use in the field.
They were a good confidence-booster for the youngster following me into the swamp!

Hi Daryl the choke in my M6 is ful or rather tight .it is made by CZ for springfeild and stainless steel there is no choke marking indicating that on the gun. sadly the 410 slugs are always very light and no factory try to make a decent ½ ounce(220 gr)+ slug for this caliber as in 3 inch shells the shot loads are up tp nearly 3/4 ounce weight. i am sure with a heavier slug than 200 grain it would do nice for games of deer seize att under 50 yards range, but 1/5 and even 1/4 ounce slugs are rather light. cheers Daniel

I reload my own 410 ammo for the boys. Using the 2.5 inch cases and 3 x 36 cal balls is a good load for animals upto goat size. The 36 cal balls weigh 80gns each which gives you 240 gns of lead and are great upto about 50 yards. Also tried 158gn 38cal lead round nose with average results. Al

Alan - some time ago, I attempted, without success to relieve my friend of a Rossi side by side double. The barrels, if shortened to 24" from 26", would have enough meat for rifling. I meant to have a little side by side double rifle using 300gr. to 350gr. cast bullets. I figured it would easily make about 1,350fps with the 350's & 3" plastic, matching the .40/70 of Sharps fame.
The 3, triple Ought load is an older, but good load for defense and as you've found - for shooting goats. It as listed in an article in a Gun Digest from the 70's I think. Too, the .444 Marlin, also featured in a similar article, has all sorts of 'special' loads. The triple ball load was also listed for it, but using full sized, .451" sized down to .430". At 130gr. each at 1,800fps muzzle vel. and printing into an 18" circle at 100 meters, they'd put up a good 'fight' scenario.
