Austrian Gunsmith Builds Barrels and Actions out of Damascus
      #123624 - 10/01/09 06:55 PM

I don't know anything about Johann Glatz other than that he used to work in Ferlach and has now started building kipplaufs on his own. I just love the look of Damascus steel and think that the Damascus kipplaufs that he makes look lovely despite the bad photographs on his website. Just click on the "Damask" tab.

If any of our European members know more about him, I would be grateful for that information.

Good hunting, everyone!

Kind of a strange combination - stainless steel /exposed hammer !

Interesting, and quite nice to look at, but I don't think I'd want a high powered action made up of continuous forged welds. Nadda! Maybe a small BP round like a .22WCF - OK.

I sent Herr Glatz an email asking what he means by "Damast", whether he is referring to a normal fluid steel barrel with a finish resembling damascas steel (not uncommon in the early days of fluid steel shot barrels), or whether he is really referring to a barrel manufactured by welding strips of steel together, and if the latter, how he manages to create a barrel capable of containing the pressures generated by modern high performance cartridges.

I will report on any answer I may receive.

i can answer it for you now. he use mordern damascus steel that has as high a strenght as any comercial steel you can find.

regarding damascus steel and barrels, they are every bit as safe as the fluid counterparts and often much stronger. i understand that in some cases low end guns the barrels have blown due to bad welds between layers.

we did a project in denmark where we x-rayed a sample of 10 damascus and 10 fluid steel barrels to see if we could find any airholes or bad velding in there. these were better guns but we found no air in any barrels of english decent. mordern steels velded together into damascus steel will give you all the pro's of the steel and no con's IF ti were made by a good company.

best regards

peter

Xausa,

Peter is absolutely right on this. The steel that Herr Glatz uses is manufactured by Damasteel in Sweden and it is a modern Damascus available both in stainless and Blue-able versions. Barrels from this steel for rifles have been made in Austria by Stefan Gobec and 1911 style pistols, slides and other components are offered by several US gunmakers including Shuey Custom and Terry Tussey. Companies including the now defunct Brno and the very active Flodman in Sweden offer guns with Damasteel made barrels. The Glatz rifle is unusual in being fully made of Damascus - I have not heard of the action on guns being made of Damascus in the past and would be happy to be corrected if, indeed, any have been made.

I have been in touch with Per Billgren who owns the Damasteel company for some years now and I have all of his brochures with his permission to post them on the internet. I shall locate and post them here.

Incidentally, the experiment that Peter talks about in testing original Damascus barrels for strength was also performed by the Double Gun Journal some time ago and they came to the same conclusions that the Danish experimenters did. While Per Billgren's barrels are extremely strong, modern steels, even the old ones, if properly made, were more than a match for fluid steel barrels according to the DGJ article.

Good hunting!

Damasteel is not true damascus [see their website !] It is a powder metal product where alternating layers of two steel powders are compressed under heat. I haven't heard of any problems with this.

I've used Damasteel in some of my knives. It is very clean and a very good product. It is no different than a contiguous steel. The manufacturing process is the same as any other powdered steel, with the exception of how the powder is arranged in the crucible prior to hot isostatic pressing to make it a solid billet. The powdered metalurgy process actually makes a superior steel due to very even distribution of the alloy elements and finer grain size in the steel. This reults in far less stress internal to the steel, and better wear resistance. Fine grain and low stress also makes toughness increase a significant amount. All this is said to remove any concern over traditional damascus issues. Damasteel is a good product.
