Sad you live in that area!

Here the limit is 33 per day {25 brook, 6 rainbow and 2 cutthroat}.

Sounds like you are taking a swipe at us down here. If so, I suggest you read the regs and do a little scouting before you hit the keys.

By the way, we don't fish lakes. The main creek we fish we have been taking hundreds out of for years. It is fun and they are tasty!!

Fly fishing for trout is my thing. Was in AK a couple months ago, caught a bunch of Rainbows 24"+... Biggest was 28" Great time.

Cuttbow (only fish I have on photobucket... Taken out of a small creek near Ketchikan, AK last year)

What about when on safari - ever done any fishing or just not interested prefering to spend your time another way?

Also back home or hunting in the mountains for example - fishing for trout?

I'm surprised at the lack of response here. I know I'm still new, and that this is primarily a hunting and shooting forum, but fishing is what I do when I can't go hunting so to speak.

Also, is it proper to revive such an old post?

I fish salt and fresh on bait, fly and lure. Nothing finer than to land a Giant Trevally or yellowtail kingfish with a fly!
They do go.

Rod - Just because I'm glad our regs don't allow the 'kill' from our lakes and rivers that your's do, doesn't mean I'm taking a swipe at you 'down there'. I don't know where you got that idea from.

I merely stated having 262 fish in your freezer would be illegal here. I didn't say it was illegal where you live - I didn't even suggest that.

I am sorry you took my post as being a negative on your fishery. Such generous limits would not be sustainable here.

When you say "These are tournament winning Reds"

What is the full name of a "Red" and where are they found ?

Red Drum commonly called Redfish. (Sciaenops ocellatus) Voracious feeders of just about anything. The males develop a pronounced bull-headed look to them when they start to get big. They are good to eat up to about 26" but I think they deteriorate from there. Popular method is to leave the skin and scales on the fillet and cook them on a grill.

Very popular sportfish in this area. They are not harvested commercially. In October they start to run and then the mature ones head for the gulf. Once they go to the open water they never come back to the bays.

Fishing in blue water you can get lucky and catch them around 60" but large ones caught while bayfishing max out around 48 inches. At about 30" you would think that there is a mule pulling on the line.

Another popular contest category is for multiple tail spots. I caught one once with 18 total, 10 on one side and 8 on the other. That's the most I have ever actually seen personally, but I have seen pictures of fish with lots more than that.

Biggest I've ever caught was 42". This one was about 41" and my Father-in-law is holding his largest ever at 43"

In the business group twice-a-year fishing tournament that I attend, fish this size are easy winners of the category for largest red. Unfortunately I (obviously) lost to my Father-in-Law that year but I won the poker tournament so it was ok.

Also a big deal here is to "Grand Slam" which is to catch a red, a speckled trout, and a flounder in one day. I've only done it once.

Come to Texas and try it sometime!

Edward

Great photos guys.

Re the 18 Spots.

What is the significance of the spots ?

More spots with age ?

And why more on one side than the other ?

Another name for Red Fish, especially along the east coast of the U.S., is Channel Bass.

From what I've read, there really isn't any significence, or reason concerning the number of spots. Probably more of a genetic occurance more than anything.

My bloke has moved up from a baby rod to using his own Abu and my lightest reel, a Pflueger.
Heres a trout he handled all by himself.

And thats the lil Missy, who has suddenly decided my TFO 6'6" rod with a smallish Shim 4000 is just right for her
