Hensoldt scope adjustments

I recently bought a Franz Sodia SS made in 1964 with claw mounted Hensoldt Wetzler Dialytan 4x scope. The scope has both windage and elevation adjustments on it and I am pretty sure from examining and shooting the gun that it was unfired when I bought it. The adjustment turret heads have 4 screws each on them and one of the screws is silver colored and the rest are blued to match the head. I am thinking the silver one is a locking screw and it must be loose to turn the heads. Can anyone confirm this to me or have any experience with the Hensoldts of the 1960 period or do you know someone who could advise me.

I copied this from a ealier post I had remembered.

Those old Hensoldts are classy pieces IMO.

Of the four screws there should be ONE lighter (silver colored) screw and the other three should be brass or possibly even blackened. Net, there should be a BIG difference between the three & one of them. We're currently interested in the LIGHTER colored one; because:

You loosen the silver colored screw to adjust the elevation. The elevation adjustment is accomplished by turning the inner turret once the screw has been completely loosened and it should be re-tightened after the adjustments are made. The old Hensolts did not have a centered recticle, so you'll be able to see how much adjsutment has been made by the position of the recticle in the scope's field of view; either lower/higher of center/middle. Depending on the manufacturing date; it may or may not have "Clicks" or the turret simply turns.

If you cannot get enough adjsutment, then ALL four screws are removed and you will most likely have to use a mechanical aid (PLIERS!) to further adjsut the recticle either higher or lower. By this time you will definately be seeing a difference in the position of the recticle in the scope.

There is @ maximum of 50 cm's; or 20" total horizontal adjsutment built into these older scopes which means from dead center you've only got about 10" to play with - either higher or lower.

Did they ever develop centered reticles as I believe this scope is original to the rifle and it was a1964 gun. Seems like they should have been perma-centered by then. Actually the elevation is about 1" high and 3.5" to the right at 50 yards. I plan to try to adjust the windage today and if it is not perma-centered, I will put it back to original setting and do the adjustments in the claw base screws on the rear base. I don't mind slight elevationvariations from center, but windage off centeredness is somehow annoying, to me. Thanks for your feed back and I'll let you know my findings.

Sorry, but I can't see the point in extensive adjustment of graticle-movement scopes. If zero is not near enough to the middle to appear centred, the scope has been mounted badly and needs to go back to a competent gunsmith. The need to have the crosswires near the centre is apparently imortant with image-movement scopes (when seen from the objective end) as well, if parallax problems are to be avoided.
