2005 Hunt... what time of year is best???
      #12322 - 24/03/04 08:16 AM

OK, lets assume that we want to book a 2005 hunt, what time of year is "best"

a few criteria:

1) fewer bugs=better
2) heat=no problem
3) cold=aggravating
4) rain=no big deal
5) good hunting=BIG DEAL!!!!

Usually I choose the best time only looking for the best month to get my "main" animal. This year I'll go in October because there're more choices to get an Elephant .

What country or countries are you thinking of? Also in the case of South Africa, what area, as the weather isn't the same as others at the same time.

In reply to:

The heat may be quite different from what you know in North America and the rain even more so. The rainy seasons are one reason many months are not hunted and depend on the region being hunted. Its better to narrow down to a region or country and main game animals first. Africa is a big continent.

Namibia, wherever Vaughan Fulton Hunts...

as for heat, we do 105F with 80-90% humidity for a few weeks every year, and sometimes its 105 with 5% humidity...

we get the worst of both worlds....

EDIT: and for two weeks in january the high was ~3F... so, yeah, not much I haven't seen.

I'll be hunting with Vaughan in May of 2005. I would suggest any time from May through August. The hunting in May-June has the advantage that the animals really haven't been hunted prior to this time, so are a little less skittish. The advantage to July-August is the grasses and brush have dried out so visibility is a bit better. You really can't go wrong with either period. Temperatures should range from 30's or 40's in the morning up to 70's and 80's by afternoon. Humidity is very low-10 to 20 percent, and virtually no chance of any rain. Insects are also at a minimum that time of year. In May the Kudu are still in rut too. I guess what I'm trying to say is to pick a time May thru August, and have a ball.

Best visability is in August. About the only bugs will be mopane flies, a head net works wonders. I always take one when I go over. They are actually stingless bees but seem to want to make a living off of your sweat. The temps are nice in August too. Warm during the day and cold at night. Take a winter coat for evenings.

May, June, July are all good times to hunt. Any earlier and you could run into a very green countryside yet and run into some visability issues. Maybe some difficulty locating game if it has been real wet, but unlikely in Namibia.

Look out, Namibia is a beautiful place, you will fall in love with it! I think the most marvelous sight I remember is a large herd of buckskin oryx galloping in a flat grassy pan when I was up one of the big rock outcroppings that dot the landscape.
