Hi Brian, welcome back. No I found that they were a good close fit and I saw no need to change them. All that I did was to chuck the pins in my lathe and stone the tips of them to a slightly rounder and dead-smooth profile. There is absolutely NO evidence of any primer cratering with the load that I regulated this rifle for.

Hi Ron.Just a quick little note.I have been looking at your build of the 303 and I'm wondering if you made the two spacers that you tig welded between the barrels the same thickness or did you make the front one thinner too allow for the fit of the top and bottom ribs. Thanks alsredoak

Once you have the spacers machined to shape, the tension of the barrels on them will hold them in place temporarily. Then you need to try the ribs in place. If there is interference, then it's necessary to file or machine the spacer down until it does not prevent the rib from fitting down tightly onto the barrels. It's a pretty simple thing to do really.

Again, nice fine work, Ron. Congratulations on the pig hunt. Have you shot anything with the 12 bore rifle - if so, what load?

Thanks Darryl. I've killed 10 deer with that 12-bore rifle, using the Lightfield Hy-Bred slugs that I regulated it with. I'm heading up north of Sault Ste. Marie tommorrow morning to hunt bullwinkle for about 17 days. I'm only taking one rifle with me, this .303 double. It would be fun to pop a moose with it! Wish me luck!

A late and possibly irrelevant post to your superb work. I had a blob of Hi-Force 44 solder from a job lying on the bench for over a year and noticed it had no signs of tarnish, remaining quite shiny. I was finishing two rifle projects with NECG express sights and hadn't quite figured out how to put wire in the grooves. I disassembled the sights and using a narrow propane torch tip I heated each standing and folding leaf up and filled its groove with Hi-Force 44 in lieu of platinum. I had to be careful to not heat the folding leaf tensioner spring in the main part of the sight excessively. I did that by loosely gripping the sight in unprotected vise jaws to act as heat sinks. Two years from now platinum may seem like a much better idea. We'll see.

Dennis, I've used platinum wire and I've done it your way. One seems to be as good as the other.

Well fellows, the time has flown by and in only two days, on Saturday afternoon, I'm heading back to Africa. This trip is to South Africa for plains game. My wish list is Blue Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Grey Duiker, Warthog, and Nyala, to add to my modest little trophy room. The only rifle that I'm taking is this little .303 British double that I built. It is shooting some very close groups at 100 yards and I plan to take everything with it. Look here for some photos, hopefully, in about two weeks.

Ron:
I've really enjoyed your build along and I'm intrigued by your method of twisting the barrels to change one barrel shooting higher than the other. I have a rifle with that problem and wonder if you could elaborate on the procedure. I'm assuming you did this after all the barrel soldering had been finished. Any help you can furnish would be appreciated. Have great African trip, I was in Nambia in July.
Thanks
Bob

Ron:
I just re-read you build along and see my question was answered, if I would have payed more attention to the pictures with your device included in them. I believe I will give that a try. Again thanks so much for all the photo's and information.
Bob

Well folks, we got back last night and the trip could not have been much better. As promised, here are a few of our many photos.

Took this nice Eland bull at 225 yards, at 1:00 pm on first day. One shot through left shoulder,
no exit but lungs destroyed and he went down within 30 yards. That's my wife Rosemary beside me.

Took this Grey Duiker at 95 yards at 6:45 am on day three. Bullet clipped off two 1/2" branches, was deflected about 2". Duiker ran into the thick brush. The little Jack Russell is named "Doumpie" and belongs to PH, Barry Vermeulen. It took Doumpie about 30 seconds to find my Duiker, dead as a mackerel, about 25 yards from where I shot him!

We got within 135 yards of this Blue Wildebeest, in the afternoon of day three. He was quartering to us. I hit him just in front of left shoulder and he took off into the brush with the rest of the herd. Doumpie found him, in short order, lying in the tall grass about 60 yards from where I had hit him. He was completely bled out.

This is a very nice Nyala bull that I took on the morning of day four. He was quartering away at 135 yards and one shot on left shoulder did the trick.

A decent, representative Red Hartebeest bull, taken on morning of day six. He was standing broadside at 145 yards. Shot took him on left shouder and exited on right shoulder. He ran about 60 yards and piled up dead.PH is Louis DuPlessis, a great one!

This is a pretty decent Warthog sow that I took on the afternnon of day six. She was broadside to us at about 120 yards. Shot broke a rib going in, took the top off of the heart, and broke a rib on the exit. She died where she stood.

I took this big old Warthog boar as he trotted across the trail in front of us on the afternoon of day seven. I didn't lead him enough and broke his back. A follow-up shot was required to finish him. Really heavy, massive tusks that are well-worn from years of rooting.

Great accomodations, home-cooked meals in liberal quanties, two great PH's, and lots of game. Nitro Safaris out of Kimberley, South Africa.

Way to go Ron.

I'm amazed at the apparent AGE of that old warhog. With all the predators about, I'd not have thought any small-in-size 'eatin' animal would/could get that old.

Well done Ron. It must be a pleasure hunting with a rifle you need yourself.

Well done with the .303 too on a fine list of game.

Nicely done. I just returned also and took my .303 H&H DR (re-chambered to 35 WCF) and killed an impala, pig and gnu. All were under 100 yards as I used the iron sights.

Nothing, but nothing carries like a round action small bore DR. Cuped in my hand or over my shoulder (Africa carry) the deep drop on the stock is like a sailboat keel keeping the rifle righted. The slim SxS bbls fit my had perfect - and - at 8 pounds I need no stinking sling.

The long 28" bbls hold a bead so steady that it begs you to shoot open sights.

I would love to shoot it more, but every shot of that 115 year old is one closer to a breakage. I reserve every shot for hunting now.

I am truly envious Ron... That's a really beautiful job you did........................ outstanding indeed. Excellent shooting too I must say.

A double in 303 has been a dream for as long as I can remember. Sadly it's not as easy to do what you have done here in the UK assuming one has the skills to do it in the first place.

Your PH on your hunt might have liked to see this:-

Which is inlet into this rifle stock:-

An original DWM Plezier rifle .................. not a 303 of course but there again.

Ron that is a very nice looking rifle and a calibre that I am partial to. You obviously take great pride in your work. Well done.

The hunt produced some nice looking trophies not to mention the 4 legged tracker:-)

I use to have a Laurona SXS 12 gauge. It was cheap but came to my shoulder well and took a world of abuse so I think you chose a good action.
