Still under training but he looks for rabbits every day. What do you think he is looking for standing on the mesh fence like that?

And the little bugger hasn't yet, but he could jump that fence having successfully jumped onto the back of a truck tray much higher last week.

He's survived getting loose in the city for five hours and one neighbour catching him then turning him back out onto the street, and another putting him in their backyard, feeding him, watering him etc. Messages on my mobile voicemail when we got home. Very stressed little dog but alive.

The creeks are not running near us but there is a big enough pool so he gets "swimming lessons" at that. Still training him, proper hunting is too early so far.

BTW gave him a Kong for his birthday. Supposed to keep a dog busy for hours trying to get the food out. Took Blitz two minutes. First he licked some out, then he chewed on it, then worked out throwing it up in the air and making it bounce dislodged the food the fastest.

Still be played with it for 40 minutes like a play, throwing into the air and retrieving it, then running around. At one time making a 40 metre run up before throwing it into the air, fetching, then running away to get a run up again. Like a young child.

he is growing in nicely john, and good for you keeping up with the training, dont expect to much from him before 1,5-2 years old and they dont get good before 3. thats my expirence anyway

Blitzen is a bit slower developing than Siegfried. Sieg started to become very trainable at 9 months, and this dog is coming to a similar stage now or still in the future.

On the other hand this pup is with me almost 100% if the time and Sieg was by himself too much during the day, or with people giving him bad habits.

This dog is so far very attentive and comes at a call, and ranges much much closer if we go for a walk. Something I work hard to encourage by changing direction or hiding.

Unfortunately the very ready availability of rabbits - probably on my lawn right now - mean he likes self hunting for them and this encourages chasing. How do you fix that?!

and now for the serius part, it depends if you want him to chase rabbits in the future ?

if his job is gonna be only birds and deer, then chok him.... it will take the lust for bunnys right out of him.

on the other hand if you want him for rabbits as well, then it becomes a littel more complex.

i use growling as a attention bringer, before the impuls hit him. and also i use running like a idiot after the dog so i can scold him in the situation, nobody really owns up to this tool which is the major part of the really good dogs.

He has retrieved rabbits for me already. Just he likes to play not giving them to me. He comes near and sits when told, but likes to make it a game of not giving up. So far he has had a light hold on them.

Yes one of his primary game to hunt will be hare and rabbits. By far the most common.

Then ducks, maybe quail.

Deer will be the least likely.

I want to train him to point them, not chase them. But irresistible to a puppy.

He's looking very nice! Time for a higher fence, your tempting fate. If I leave the older Britt alone by himself he'll be running channels looking for ducks until he's tired ... usually about an hour of solid swimming chasing the ducks does it for him. Something flapping in the distance would have him over that fence, though jumping into an electric when he was younger has tempered his greatest urges to jump fences.

Just some thoughts ... maybe back to recall basics on a check cord to get him through the "I've got it in my mouth, I might just dawdle and have some fun Dad' otherwise backpedal and watch him come in like a rocket! If he doesn't want to hand over, possibly teach him to come back, walk around and sit beside you as if at heel ... then take it off him once he's relaxed a little.

Who cares though, he's just an unruly teenager.

He's been out bunny hunting with me several times. However today he brought me a rabbit himself. Not sure if he found it dead or killed it, as it had eyes affected by myxomatosis. He's brought me a very young rabbit off his own efforts a month or so ago during vintage. One problem of having rabbits everywhere is dogs learn to self-hunt.

We used to use a "rabbit pen" to steady dogs to rabbit (particularly the b#####d Springers) in the
uk. Basically an enclosure with some cover containing rabbits, and then reprimanding them for following up on their flush (rather along Peters lines)
Peter Moxon the one time doyen of gundog training in the UK wrote a couple of good books on this
I might have an old copy laying around if you are interested.

You have a beautiful dog. I would steady him to wing first (I think birds will be easier to work with) using a 20’ check cord and a standard choke collar. Teach him to heal, come when called and the important “Whoa” command. I dizzy pigeons or pen raised quail and place them for the dog to find while he is on the cord and correct accordingly. There are a lot of good books on the subject. Once he gets the idea that you are a team he should point whatever game you come across. I would never use a shock collar until I was sure the dog knew his commands was given one and he failed (looks at you and gives you the proverbial finger) to respond
