.600 OK vs .600NE- Recoil Comparo
      #12160 - 22/03/04 02:43 PM

This weekend I shot a Heym .600NE with 165 grs of IMR7828 with Barnes 900 gr solids vs the same load in the .600 OK. Both guns are very accurate at 50 yrds and it's easy to get 2 inch groups off-hand with either rifle. However, the felt recoil ( my aching shoulder ) says the .600 OK with a F990 pad, vias style muzzel brake, 3 groove rifling and three mercury recoil reducers in the butt kicks about 1/2 as hard!!!. A local buddy joined me in the antics and reported exactly the same thing. In fact it was hard to entice him to shoot the Heym more than three times period! Both of us were very willing to keep shooting the .600 Ok but not the .600 NE. The Heym with a 23 inch barrel and no brake hit 1950fps and the .600 Ok with a 26 inch barrel hit 2070fps with the same load. Under actual hunting conditions, I don't think the recoil of the Heym would actually bother me, but a steady diet would probably induce a world class flinch. I imagine some people would never want to shoot a gun like this again. The .600Ok at .600 NE velocities is an easy gun to shoot well. However, at 2400fps the torque of the gun becomes a very real problem.-Rob

Aw come on Rob, you didn't fire off that little puppy on the bench? Shit, the thought of doing that makes my rotator cuff start to ache and I'm anticipating the flinch. Sight picture, close both eyes and yank the trigger, OWEE!

Off the bench? No way Jose! I could get seriously injured at this power level! I shot the .600 Ok with a scope though! No way I'd do that with the Heym!-Rob

What was the weight of the Heym? If it was 15 the recoil was around 115, that would make the 600 OK 60? That is certainly managable, although brisk.

The Heym weighs 12.5 lbs on my scale. My calibrated shoulder ( Oh the pain) says the Heym was more like 150ft-lbs and the .600 Ok more like 75-80.ft-lbs-Rob

Alan

I had a friend who had a 600NE Thys that weighed 10.5 or 11 pounds. Now that was brisk. He had a set of 375 FM barrels made and it weighed in at 13 pounds. All of the extra steel in the barrels to fit the action. It was a tack driver for sure but a bit heavy that way.

He sold it to the wife of the CEO of Coca Cola so she could give it to her husband for a Valentines Day present.

I shot it twice as the 600, once each on two seperate days. The owner is the only one who shot it twice at the same time but he sorta had to in front of us.

Mick, 10.5-11#? That ain't brisk, that's insanity. I'm getting a concussion thinking about it. It would probably put me back like that dude in the Nickudu files that built that 4-Bore with external hammers.

Rob, would that Heym be 500Grains' rifle? There aren't too many 600 NE's floating around in a Heym.

Yeah,
That's exactly what I was talking about regarding Nitro's greener shottie to double rifle project.
You must match the bore size to the barrel spacing of the action frame or you end up with too much/too little metal, or metal in the wrong places for the best weight/ballance/feel etc.
The good gun makers knew/know exactly how to do this and how to distribute the weight correctly.

Aw come on Rob, the .600 Heym is not that bad! I found if I rested 10 minutes between shots, I could keep 3 shots in 3 inches offhand at 50 yards. It sure hung nicely for me, and the trigger is great. But if I were going to hunt with the rifle, I would change over to a different recoil pad and get a bit of mercury in the butt. The rifle is a tad muzzle heavy so it could probably stand 2 mercury tubes in the butt with no difficulty.

Rob
How is the 600 Ok at about 2200fps? Ill have to have you email me some starter loads. I hope to finish up my bolt in the next couple of weeks then send of the action and barrel to be joined.

500 grs and Dean- See I musta done it wrong. I fired off three shots in about a minute. HURT LIKE HELL! I shoulda waited 10 minutes between shots!
Dean- You need a 12 inch drop tube to get 165 grs of IMR 7828 into the .600 OK cases. To get above that level you need to go to H414. Try starting with 156 grs of IMR7828 and working up.Depending on the design of your break and the number of mercury recoil reducers you put in the stock and your recoil tolerance will determine max velocity for you. I,ve been to 2400fps with a 900 gr Bridger and I alsmost can't hold on to the rifle because of the torque. Work up slowly to this level and wear a Past recoil pad! You can achieve a level of recoil with this gun which literally may break bones if you lose control! I frankly think you will be very very happy even at 1950fps.I have to send you the plastic water bottle video of the .600 Ok in action!-Rob

Rob
Thanks. I ordered a semi inletted stock for her yesterday. I was hoping seregetti would get that rhino done but I got a scaled up british express in english walnut from GA stocks.
I used devcon for bedding around the action and cross bolts and recoil lugs of the 458 ill do the same with this.
I most likely will shoot it in the 1900 to 2000 fps range as now it is just a toy.I would like to shoot a pig with it! If I ever go back for a buff or elephant then ill push the loads up.
I have almost finished my brake I crossed yours with a "Vias" Hope to finish the mag box cover latch and bolt this month then ill get in touch with someone to install my barrell. Not sure who yet going to start with Pac-nor and go from there.
Dean
Have you ever used RL-15 in any loads got a whole can i need to use up?

you guys are, litterally, insane...

my 8.5lb 375 Holland is enough of a pop on the socket at ~2700...

maybe you just use it as a desensitizer, after shooting these things, you don't notice a 460wby???
