CZ in .425 Westley Richards
      #121403 - 17/12/08 03:31 PM

Saw today that CZ will be offering a new Express Rifle on the standard, non-magnum action for '09 and one of the cailbers will be the .425 W.R. I want one B-A-D but the cost of these "custom" CZs is getting way up there. Plus, I still haven't picked up the .404 CZ I've been paying on for awhile... Other cartridges offered were .416 Taylor and the .375 & .416 Rugers, along with several other common ones.

Interesting.

I will be really interested to see how they get that thing to feed...reliably.

Anybody care to weigh in here?

BTW: the .425 is a really interesting cartridge. I wonder how many they expect to make...?

I handled a friends 425 and it fed fine. This was on a non marked standard size M-98 with thumb cut. It was built like a fine english bolt rifle but had no markings anywhere other than ".425". For its condition it was surely used plenty and the bore showed signs of many rounds down range. It did not have the 2 spring tabs in the mag box that I have seen pictured in other WR built guns.

+++++++++

I actually saw a similar article and add in another mag as well..agree the .425 would be awesome..guess my thought, per 9.3x57's comments, was to take it straight to my gunsmith to have him give it a once over..at least before I would take it on a trip..

Thumbing through a magazine on the newstand, there was a full page CZ add listing some of the new offerings for '09. Looking forward to getting an actual CZ catalog.

I have a CZ custom in 404 Jeff. I had them use wood laminate and use a waterproof metal finish along with smoothing the action out, etc.Looks great, but right from their custom shop it would not pick up cart. from the mag. The bolt would not grab and feed properly.I returned and they fixed very quickly. Upon using then , since it did feed rounds now, I found the ramp for the cart. going into the chamber was too rough to allow soft lead exposed rounds, woodleigh, to feed, they grabbed the rough areas.I returned again, with some ammo so they could do the proper work. They asked for the ammo since they said they did not have any avail., but I wanted them to have mine to be sure. Rifle was returned with a few extra shipping scratches, front sight cover knocked off with associated scratches, etc, but it shots a nice 1" group at 100 yds and feeds nice now.You need to tell the custom shop what you expect to have done in detail, since you are paying for it, and or ship it back as needed or off to someone to do the final proper finish work if you get one as I did.

CZ "custom" shop doing work on a rifle, and they don't even have ammo to test the feeding!
Sounds goofy to me.
I will be surprised if we see 425WR as a standard chambering from CZ - would be neat if they did, but I won't hold my breath.

I had a prewar 425 Westley in and it was an excellent rifle! It had the drop box magazine and 27 inch barrel. In the rear portion of the receiver, it had the little spring actuated clips that controlled the feeding. In later years they made this rifle without the clips and feeding was a nightmare. I think this is a great move on the part of CZ if they can assure positive feeding.

My 425 Westley feeds fine with the two spring clips but have heard from people with 425s with no clips that they have had no problems with feeding.
I wonder if it was a case of a few bad Apples creating a bad name, much like the 458Win?

Hard to say but Westley's best quality 425's were always made with the clips. In the early 50's they built some without the clips and they had feeding problems. I would think a good smith should be able to make it feed but it must be a person who knows their stuff. Tom Burgess in Montana comes to mind as he is an expert in this type of work.

FYI..

There is a pretty good article on the .425 Westley in this months issue of "RELOADER" magazine''
Just read it this afternoon...the article basically states what has already been brought up on the thread..if the feeding problems would have been addressed sooner than later, the cartridge would have had an entirely different end result in regards to popularity...

ATTACHED IS THE INFO I HAD READ OVER THE PAST WEEKEND---PULLED IF OFF OF A WEB SITE--SO WILL NOT GUARANTEE THE LOADS---BUT HERE YOU GO..

Ripp

Introduced by Westley Richards in 1909 as a proprietary cartridge for their bolt action rifles, this round has a rebated rim of lesser diameter than the case body in order that it would fit a standard diameter Mauser bolt face. This is another very popular round for use against big game.
This text is based on information from “Cartridges of the World”, Hodgdon reloading manual, the cartridge designer and/or own resources.

I have one of the "early 50's" Game Ranger WR rifles in 425 w/o clips and if feeds perfectly....fast as you want. If someone wants some load data I can send it. Don't recall exact loads, but think I used 4895, 4350 and Varget...but have the info at the office. All loads with the Woodie softs and solids. I didn't max it out, but was getting speeds around 2275 fps or so.
