Ronvella- Thanks. I cut the barrels today, stripped the monoblock and ordered the reamer and tap. The good news is I was able to profile a ER shaw 12Ga CM barrel today that looks like it will work just fine. The bad news is I need a second one. Luckily they are only $120 US. Looks like I will have to bore the chambers to .900, then ream to .906 before running in the tap. Should have the block done by next week and at least one barrel fitted. I will take your advice and solder with high force44. I've used it many times before and have a propane/air Turbo torch so getting a good solder joint shopuld be no problem. Any advice on tinning the barrel and/or monoblock?-Rob

I always pre-tin all mating surfaces of the barrel shanks and the monoblock with Hi-Force, using lots of flux and a small wire brush. Make sure that you have 100% coverage,as you will not achieve that if you try soldering things at final assembly, without any flux. Allow to cool, then scrub well in HOT water and soap to remove all traces of the very acidic flux. If you skip this step, you'll have problems with rust at the joints forever. Don't ask me how I know this!!!! You won't need flux for the final assembly, once everything is pre-tinned. A second pair of hands is invaluable here because it's kinda tricky trying to play the torch over the monoblock, and the barrel shanks, while trying to thread the barrels into the block at the same time. Get yourself an assortment of machinist's polishing stones in 6"x1/2"x1/4" size, in grits from 240 up to 600. They are great for removing the excess solder once things cool, without scarring the steel.

Good advice, Ron. Thanks. We used a similar process, albeit on a much smaller scale for bushing the pin-hole of a Martini for high pressure Hornet loads. The finished job came out perfect. Good luck, Rob.

Once you have tinned everything. For the final assembely cut some scrap 1" x1" or 2 x 1 mild steel bar and clamp them alongside the underlugs. By making the mass of steel very much greater it will hold the heat more evenly and for a lot longer giving you more time for threading in the barrels lineing up etc.

Regards

Rob,
As an aside, ER Shaw makes first rate barrels, I have built two bolt guns, one in .264 and the other in .458, using his barrels. They are both absolute tack drivers. The .458 started as a full 30" x 1 1/2" barrel. You could drop 500 grain Hornadys, driven at 2200 fps, into one hole, at 100 yards, all day long with that 16 pound rifle, off the bench. It was like a 45 calibre varmint rifle. As a matter of fact, I DID shoot a number of sod poodles with it but eventually I cranked the barrel off, shortened it to 26", reduced the diameter to .750" at the muzzle, and kilt a Cape Buffalo with it.

Rob,
There is a thread on this site, under the heading "The .450 #2 passes the test with flying colours" which I started last year. It has a bunch of photos of a double rifle which I just completed about a month ago, in that calibre. Unfortunately I couldn't get the photos to open when I did a search a few minutes ago, otherwise you'd be able to see what a tight, virtually invisible, seam you are able to achieve with the method that I described.

Ronvella/Bramble- Thanks guys thats the type of info I am looking for. I'd love to see those pics too. I'm hoping for a similar outcome. The only concern I have is that my barrel shank will be .904 and once reamed the rim of a 12ga is .880. so there is not much left of the new barrel. I realize this area is surrounded by the 1.116 inch monoblock and extractor but its still thinner than I'm accustomed to. I've had this ER shaw 12 ga barrel for ages and was planning on using it on a SS Highwall I was scalling up. Now I think I'm going to order its mate and use it for the DR.

Addendum- ER SHaw has no barrels in 12Ga for 6-9 months so I ordered them from Pac-NOR.
Finished the Zaballa monoblock this morning. I bought a 10 inch .906 chucking reamer( cut it down to 5 inches OAL) and went very slow with lots of coolant to ream the chambers, then counterbored and threaded the chambers 15/16X32. Finally faced the action with a End Mill. Whole process took 2 hrs. Looks great too! Took pics but dont know how to post them here yet.-Rob

Ronvella and Robgunbuilder:

Please email your photos to me at stephens@cfw.com

I will gladly post them to the forums. I can put your photos into your post.

Ron - this includes the photos from "The .450 #2 passes the test with flying colours" as a Moderator I can go back and fix that thread to display photos properly.

I think everybody benefits from the photos, so please send them.

Thanks,
Curl
