Anybody Hunted with 475 Linebaugh - 480 Ruger?
      #12110 - 21/03/04 05:24 PM

I have developed loads for a 470 NE double rifle using Hornady 475 cal XTP projectiles(325 & 400 gr) and have been extremely disapointed with their performance on light-skinned game. Absolutely zero expansion - and this is at velocities much higher than handgun velocities (not as yet chronographed - my PACT packed up!)

I had thought of getting some Speer pills - but they are hard to come by (in Australia), and I don't want to go to the effort if they are NBG as well!

Any chance of getting your loads for the Hornady's?

I have had a Freedom Arms 83 in the 475 Linebaugh for a couple of years now. I've only used hard cast bullets in it for game as expanding bullets will sometimes not work at all or every now and then will go very spectactularly. My original 777 post was in direct relation to use lighter 475 Linegaugh bullets for practice. It seems that 5744 may the way to go. I still have my dies, brass and plenty of 475L bullets waiting for the time when I can get another 470 NE. It seems that since the revolver bullets act like solids, why not use them as such and just go for the shoulder and break them down anyway. My experience with the 475 is that if I use that method, I have no problem pursuing any piggie I whack. I just punch through both sides of both shoulders and they usually pile up about 10-50 yds. There is hardly any meat destruction and I can eat all the way up to the bullet hole.

475guy - 500gn Woodleighs pills actually work better on light-skinned game than the lighter Hornady XTP .475 cal pills I have been using. The idea of using pistol bullets in my double was to improve on the Woodleighs, which are cheaper here in Australia, so the Hornady's are a "lose - lose" option. The local agent for Speer is reluctant to bring in Gold Dots in .475 cal, however, I would import some direct if I thought they would perform better than Woodleighs. Have you used Speers?

I haven't tried any Speers in my 475 but I know several guys who have tried them with pretty good results. I guess that I have been brainwashed and old fashioned enough to just stick with hard cast bullets at 1350-1400. Everything I've whacked with them has expired on the spot. Like I said, I just go for the shoulder shot and try to break down the big bones so that they can't run on me. I'm way too old to chase critters who can run much faster than me with four legs. If I get the chance to talk the other 475 users I'll try to finagle a few Gold Dots for you. The shipping will probably be hell.

475guy - thanks for the offer on the Speers - but post 9/11 I imagine the paperwork at your end would be horrendous. Since you report good results with them, I will do some armtwisting with the Speer importer.

470R, go to www.handgunhunt.com and click on the Show-Me Safaris-Hitmen In The Ozarks article. The guy uses the 475 Linebaugh with Speer Gold Dots. This jives with what others have relayed to me on their hunts.

475 Guy,

Thank's for the tip. The shape of that Speer pill didn't inspire me with confidence even though it did the job. I'm going to see if I can get my hands on some Hawk pills - at least they are designed for .470 Nitro!

I have hunted with a Linebaugh built .475 since 1997. Using bullets in a LBT style LFN construction from water quenched wheel weights. I have killed elk, moose, antelope, black bears, hogs and 1 bison. These bullets weight in at 420 grains using my standard load of H-110 giving me 1320 fps and I have only recovered one from any game animal. On my bison hunt I hit it a little too far back(missed the shoulder) and punched through both lungs and out onto the prairie. on the follow up, I shot the bison quartering away just ahead of the right hip angling forward. The bullet was recovered just inside the skin of the left (broken)shoulder blade.
I am in the process of converting my 375 H&H to the 470 Capstick. I will have no fear using hard cast, gas checked bullets. In addition to being deadly they are cheaper.

--------------------
What they could not do at gunpoint they now accomplish in courts of law with men in black robes.

I have shot a Linebaugh for quite a number of years. I shoot only cast bullets and have not needed anything else. Good luck with your project.

With my Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh I have taken a turkey [with a 420 cast at 983 fps], and a deer, wild pig and a black bear, with the Hornady factory 400gr XTP.
The exit wounds seemed to show some expansion, but I have not recovered any bullets yet.
I shot one of them into some animal glue bullet testing material and it was expanded big time, and held together well.

Try casting your own with a mix of pure lead and wheel weights and reduce the velocity to about 900 fps and use a gas check. You will like the results.

I use cast bullets in my freedom arms .475 for all thin skinned animals. Here is a pic:
