Couple of questions
      #120871 - 11/12/08 06:23 AM

Hello to all.
A few years ago I came up with a novel concept, one that I would build myself a Double rifle. I have no problem building things, and do it quite often. However not wanting to go through a couple of hundred years of R&D to get things right I decided to do some research on this project. The first thing that I have come across is that I am not the only one who has had this idea. And it seems that I would of not have been a pioneer in using a shotgun action in the said construction of a reasonable, and by reasonable I mean usable double rifle. I have bought the book as it it stated in the previous posts and also have many others, there is alot of missing information however. In my quest for knowledge I came across this site and in order to use their search funtion I had to register, and in doing so discovered some more topics, like this one. My experience with double rifles is extreemly limited to having handled, but not shot a Merkel in .470 in Zimbabwe last year and looking at a Kodiak in 45-70 at Cabelas some years ago on a trip to the US. "CHECK FIRING - I know how you feel about the Kodiak, but just stating the facts." I have located and bought two J.P. Sauers in 12G 2.75" with damaged barrels, seems someone dropped something heavy on them, they are as tight as a bank vault.
So then this leads me to a few questions, for those of you who have done this before. Is your choice of calibers determined by ballance of the overall gun after it is complete or is it strictly determined by action size/strenght? And in determining barrel length is this taken from the face, case mouth, or beggining of rifling? And also it was mentioned in a previous post but could not find it, would it be possible to get an approximate barrel profile, as I dont think the standard ones for bolt guns would look very appropriate.
My decision to go this route is about 20% financial and the rest is all about the build, maybe I am strange as for many of the things that I have built in the past, I enjoy making them more than using them.
Thanks to all.

Sharps I ahd Jason Simpkins in Colorado make me a double rifle in 50-90 caliber from a Merkel 12 gauge. It is a fine conversion gun. While I am not an expert by any means I believe he goes up to 50 cal in 12 gauge donor shotguns and is working on a .577 on a 10 gauge shotgun donor. He has also built 45-70's on what I think were 20 gauge frames.

Barrel length is whatever you want, basically. I wanted a short stopper gun and Jason did a fantastic job of making mine a 20 inch barreled fast wielding stopper gun that is as about as powerful as a 500 Light NITRO, which is enough for stopping about any beast on the planet. Blam Blam.

His brother is on this forum. Bonanza. I encourage you guys to work out best ways to reach Jason if you want to talk to an expert in conversions, like Jason is.

I have a 50-90 double rifle on a beautiful Merkel frame that shoots great, looks great, and cost me a fraction of what a 50 cal double rifle that is this beautiful would cost.

If I may ask, what did the 50-90 conversion cost you?? I'm thinking of selling my 45-100 on a Merkel 12 frame after I go pig hunting with it. I'm too old to lug the 10 lbs (w/scope)around much, and I want to build a lighter 9.3x74 on a 20 ga frame next.

Hello to all again. If I could also ask on rates of twists on the NE caliburs, as this info is apparently not easy to find. Thanks again.

On the .450 #2 that I just finished last week. I used a pair of Douglas Supreme .458, 1:14" barrels. It shoots the 500 grain Hornadys at 2200 fps into 1 1/2" at 50 yds.

My rate of twist for my 50-90 is 1 in 15 inch! Yes fast twist but with 20 inch barrels and those massive 50 caliber, 525 grain Woodleighs, it really does stabilize and shoot perfect everytime!

I am trying to recall but I would say the cost was about $4K. I do not know if the cost is up from last year when I commissioned it.

Also detailed photos were posted here of my Merkel 50-90. I think a search of 50-90 and about APRIL/MAY of this year will show you the pictures. I can't seem to figure out how to upload photois here myslef so one other member did the posting of pictures for me but it was on a THREAD I STARTED.

Thanks to all, I have a 50 2.5" in a C. Sharps, exellent caliber for bison rifle. I am more interested in NE's for a double. To ronvella, how heavy is your 450, and where does it ballance?
Thanks again.
