I would call it alot of killing more than hunting
but a good "bomb up" never goes astray.

This plan needs more helicopters.

There WILL be SLRs involved, naturally.

Sorry if I missed something "Aussie". Curious if there is there something significant about involving SLR's?

Semi Auto Rifles are banned in Australia, however
Pro shooters here in Australia who are involved in culling
of animals (horses, pigs, camels, dinkeys, buffalo) all tend
to own and use Semi Auto rifles such as the SLR and others.

Plan to kill 400,000 Outback camels
Article from: The Advertiser

CLARE PEDDIE, SCIENCE REPORTER

December 09, 2008 03:10pm

A NATIONAL cull of 400,000 feral camels is being considered in light of a new report to federal and state governments.

The report by researchers at the Desert Knowledge Co-operative Research Centre will be launched in Canberra tomorrow.

It states that Australia has the largest wild camel herd on Earth, with more than a million camels ranging over a vast area of 3.3 million square kilometres.

Lead author Glenn Edwards from the Northern Territory says the camel population is doubling every nine years.

"The longer we take to act, the more it will cost to manage and repair the negative impacts of feral camels," he said.

The main options for camel control include aerial culling, ground culling, and fencing. But possible chemical, biological, and fertility control options are also being investigated.

To bring the number of camels down to 0.1-0.2 camels per square kilometre, Mr Edwards says an estimated 400,000 animals would have to be "removed".

The report - Managing the impacts of feral camels in Australia: A new way of doing business - is available on the web at www.desertknowledgecrc.com.au

I've actually got some in-law relatives whom own a large outback property out from Maree in SA's North. Probably mentioned on here before I've thought about seeing if a combined dingo and camel hunt would not be possible in the desert. I think I must remember to chase up contact details this Christmas for a mid-Winter 2009 hunt next year.

Camels to me don't hold much trophy value though young ones can be good eating though. A dingo skin if in good condition would be nice however.

This now raises the question what rifle/calibre would be the ideal camel slayer, I know for culling the 7.62 L1A1/SLR or M14 are preferred from a chopper but on the ground maybe a 30/06, .300H&H but they are usually shot at a distance and being a large animal maybe a .338Win?

Will you display any camel toes as a souvenir of the hunt?

I'd take my .222 (for dingoes) and my .30-06 (for camels) if the trip ever eventuates.

Id say a flat shooter would be best because the ranges could be long. My .300 Win Mag would be the shit I think.

The rule of thumb in Africa used to be that in elephant hunting you walked a mile for every pound of ivory. Would you walk a mile for a Camel?

That's what Landcruisers are for! Well at least the driving and spotting stage. But wouldn't it be cool to hunt camels from a camel. Off the beaten track, and when they are spotted, dismount, stalk and shoot. In true hunting style.

The way we hunted elephant along the Tana River in NE Kenya was to let most of the air out of the tires of the Land Cruiser and drive down the dry river bed until we came to a spot where the elephant had dug down to water with their tusks. Then we would dismount and examine the tracks. If they were big enough and smooth enough (old elephants' feet have the tread worn off them like old tires), then we would strike out after the old gentleman on foot. Inevitably we would finally locate a very old elephant with two ivory toothpicks sticking out of his head, and turn and walk resignedly back to the vehicle. Two solid weeks of this in 90 degree heat does great things for your waistline. This was the result on the final day: http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=3823381&pid=7017140&myphotos=1
