so last info just came in:

the rifle in question is a Alexander Henry serial no: 5840

it was delivered as no. 1 of a pair of 12 bore rifles on the 10 march 1885

the bore of the rifle is somewhere between 0.751" and 0.763" the grove i do not know yet.

the chamber is 12 bore chamber allthough a bit oversize. so 12 gauge brass is the order of the day.

the load as a 12 bore would be around 8 drams and a conical around 750 grains according to the book holders.(big bang)

this is it so far, i wait for the papers to arrive, and then im off to merry old england to pick them up.

best regards

peter

yes marrakai

i will do it today, and post it later tonight. the fun part is that the stuff i have to take care off, is really not that bad, but the cosmetic part has a long way to go.

cheers

Oooh, yeah!! What a marvellous thing!

I'm GREEN with envy. 12-bore double rifles really are out on their own, let alone a sidelock from the talented Scot.

Rust? All I see is potential!

You lucky bastard.

Hey Peter..

Get the bores measured fast(tonight), I might have the 900 grain bulletmold in .775cal. My 10 bore is .795cal, but my gunmakers will soon "turn it up" to my 10 bore.

Your gun is nice, needs a "touch up" perhaps from Hartmann Und Weiss, next time your are in Hamburg

Peter that is a marvelous find. Way to go. I am jealous, of course.

To save you the trouble - just ship it over & I'll clean it up for you and work up some terrific round ball loads for it - possibly 9 drams would be about right for a 650 to 700gr. ball. Probably even shoot to the sigths? I'll supply the brass, primers balls and powder. Man - what a BEAR rifle!

thanks daryl

i think both you and tinker have made a good point about the use of this rifle, and it will be used for bear hopefully this autom.

im afraid that you are right about the 9 drams of black and this gun, but only time will tell. im measuring it up at the moment, because the off face problem looks like it is a matter of a re hooking and thats all, keep fingers crossed.

what can one shoot with a 700 grain RB and 9 drams of black.

ANY frigging thing he wants.......

Peter just wanted to say congrats and wake this thread again...

Let me know what she is like to fire when you get around to it please.......

9 drams with a 700gr sounds powerful.....giving what fps?

I am very curious........not many seem to have FULLY rifled 12-bore rifles on here......mainly paradox and ball and shot.(great guns but a bit different!)

All the best

Ben

Been looking in books and stuff, the 12 bore seems to have been a concidered medium bore rifle of its time. H&H does in one of their catalogs offer a 9 drams rifle...however, in Hoyems book, there are no real powerfull load offered to the 12 bore , with the exception of WR magnum Explora.

jens

that is not entirely true, the 12 to the pound rifle were 9,3 caliber of the day from the 3-4 drams round ball load guns that took care of antelopes and worked for selfdefence against the cats, to the 6-7 drams do everything with care (even elephant), to the 9-10 drams "punching holes through everything with confidence" express speed 750-1200 grains bullets.

they differ alot, the 2 i got is worlds apart, the 7 pound hollis is a nitro gun that would be in the 4 drams realm, where this gun is a somewhere between the everything with care, and i punch holes in everything with confidence.

best regards

peter

Judging from my results with BP 12 bore RB's and velocities attained as well as from my buddies .75 Sporting Rifle, that 9 dram load should be making between 1,700 and 1,800fps with the 700gr. ball.

I'd take that for everything, with confidence, just as Peter indicated.
