Yet Another Mannlicher Schönauer: My M-1910 Has Arrived!
      #120306 - 04/12/08 03:09 PM

Well my latest acquisition has finally hit town, however it will be sitting in the gunshop for a while till the paperwork is sorted. You will have to be patient for the photos, although I can toss up the image that accompanied the initial advertisement:

The rifle is a factory take-down M-1910 Mannlicher Schönauer, chambered for the 9.5x56 Mannlicher cartridge, otherwise known as the .375 Rimless Nitro-Express (and yes, this particular specimen does have British proof-marks!). Stock is original but surprisingly without checkering. It also has the marvellous Mannlicher trap-buttplate with provision for spare cartridges. I love this stuff!

It was described as "very good condition, with excellent bore, almost as new". I have inspected the rifle and its bore is indeed 'as new'.

Once again, I am one happy camper!

Stand by for photos in a week or two.

Marrakai,

Congratulations on your new M-S.

Wonder how the factory stock went uncheckered? Do you have any information on that?

I'll be anxious to see the photos.

I asked myself the same question as Curl, why is the stock not checkered. Looking at the grip shape, it does not resemble a factory stock. Possibly restocked in England????

Marrakai- I was looking at that rifle & going through my pockets but to no avail , no funds right now !
I have a old friend (he is Old as well) of mine here who has a massive collection of Mannlichers
I will go and have a look through them , may be able to get some photos of interesting ones !

Well done on your buy !

I shall attempt to throw more light on this once the rifle is in hand. My initial inspection gave no indication of a replacement stock, however if it was done in the UK at the time of import it might well have the appearance of being original.

One could add that an English re-stock from almost a century ago should have had checkering too!!

What we should always remember when dealing with vintage arms is that the rules are: There are no rules!

Sarg: Perhaps we should pressure John for a dedicated "Mannlichers" forum!

Marrakai,

Congratulations on this rifle and on the coming hunt reports that will definitely come. Your enthusiasm for hunting with old guns is an inspiration!

pjaln:
No push-button grip-cap on my 1910 unfortunately, but you have reminded me that someone here was asking about that feature recently. They had a rifle with the button but didn't realize the cap rotates.

John: If you were to move all the current and past Mannlicher threads into one dedicated forum it would look pretty healthy on start-up!

I'll drink to that! My three favorite shootin' irons are a 1903, a 1908, and a Dutch .256 made into a nice sporter by parties unknown. I particularly want to hear how folks are making out with these sweethearts in modern hunting venues, and swap reloading info and the like. More is better!

Is the Mannlicher trap buttplate for carrying spare shells or for storing a cleaning rod? I am pretty sure I have seen a picture of an MS with a cleaning rod in butt and there are also many references to a cartridge carrier.

IMO both, two holes for ammos and one longer for very thin three or four parting cleaning rod.
