458 Remington Ultra Mag

there is a post on E-Bay for an Encore barrel in 458 Rem Ultra Mag... I've never heard of this caliber, and there's nothing on Remington's web site about it either... is there anyone that can share any insite on this caliber?... thanks... Dale...

If it is an Ultra Mag cartridge, it is just a 300 or 375 necked up to 458. All Ultra's are based on the 404 J. This just duplicates Jack Lott's 460 G&A that Jeff Cooper and Robert Peterson made famous by thumping lots of buffs and other big critters years ago.

Yup- basically the 460 G&A. A little more power than a 458 lott, but not as much as a 460 wby. Should hit 2400 with a 500 gr bullet no problemo. Now that's gonna hurt on an Encore! However, the gun can take it!-Rob
