Jeffery Farquharson Value?
      #119918 - 01/12/08 08:37 AM

I went and looked at a Jeffery Farquharson today. The action was nicely engraved and in good condition, the wood looked re-done but sound. The catch is it has been rebarreled to 450 3 1/4 nitro. The consignor was unable to say who had rebarreled it but is going to contact the owner to find out and let me know. The rebarrel job looks to be done correctly.

Any ideas as to value? The asking price is $6,500.

Thanks

Is the barrel to the original profile, have original iron sights, proof marks and are they current EU or English?

The profile looks correct, there are no proof marks and the sights while nice don't look original.

Depends where you can sell it. EU has strict rules of proof for use, that is if no proof then no shoot.

$4.5K AUD over this way or if on your turf what you can beat them down to. If non original (or to pattern) sights then lower $. (If bargaining P Barnum's quote springs to mind)

kamilaroi

He's in America, so proof wouldn't come into it
with it already having been rebarreled so it kind
of makes it irrelevant, same as if the gun was here.

How did you come up with Aus 4.5k ?

Mr. 470evans:

It does not appear to be a steal at that price, unless the workmanship is exceptional. Trouble is that, not being all original, it is more of a custom rifle than a collector's item. Nothing wrong with that if the rifle is what you want. I happen to be a big fan of custom single shot rifles...

You could have a pretty nice rifle built to your specifications for $6500 or a bit more, although without such extensive engraving. So there is one way to put a value on it. If you were going to have a $6500 rifle built, would this be it?

On the other hand, original British actions are not exactly thick on the ground here in the US. Nor anywhere else, apparently.

Does the action have a tang safety or side lever safety? If the latter, is it bolted in the up or down position?

Best of luck!

Glenn

I've been an enthusiast collector for 20 odd years. Wally has given me a credit in his volumes but then he has done the same for many. And there are my medium calibre favourites, the side pedal Frasers but I really lust after AH and Rigby rook rifles. Currently have 3 WRs and a Henry 500/450 BPE ($500 with cases and dies in 1998), bought when prices were more affordable (plus Martinis). They are out there at reasonable prices, thus my caveat about Barnum.

Incidentally if you know where you can pick up a Saunders large frame repro for final fit and finish under 5K AUD.

My comment on proof was based on international trades, just a precaution for a wider marketplace.

Thanks for the response Glenn,

The safety is a sidelever that is not bolted. There is a little ball that fits in a detent in the side of the action.

470 evans "bolted" means when it is on safe. He was asking if it's on safe when the lever points up or towards the muzzle.
