Gemsbok sticking, a real excentric dandy
      #119612 - 28/11/08 03:00 AM

Here is a picture of Francois Dannaud, sportsman, hunter and hunting agent.
A truly demanding hunt that sticking gemsbok. Not a smooth ride to catch with him and them guess which one is the most fit to stick his opponent.

Francois is yet hunting stag for real, with horses, hounds, paraphernalia and a skinny dagger. As soon as back from Ethiopia where once again he'll tackle with Mountain Nyala, he'll provide us with pictures and story. That can be interesting , he began his career with Paul Grobbler in Zimbabwe.

The look on that horse's face, the soaked coat...
Must have been a hell of a ride.

I'd like to see the film of that hunt!

Looks like a tough ride for all of the participants. I used to fox hunt via horse and hounds and know the thrill of the chase. The horses were very keen and knew the game. I would worry though with a gemsbok that when it tired that it would turn and use its own spears on its pursuers.

Maybe, but I wouldn't bet on it.

A well-conditioned horse is a truly amazing animal. Remember, that critter carried a man in addition to itself and beat the gemsbok on the gemsbok's home turf. I have chased elk and deer on horseback for kicks here, and the only thing that stops the festivities is timber...once the elk gain the dense timber it's over. On the flats you might be surprised. Most game animals have tremendous burst capacity but wear out over distance fairly quickly. Funny thing is that for some reason I would expect animals in the oryx family to possess really outstanding stamina. Maybe not compared to a good horse?

Guessing is hard tho. For example, bear look ungainly but can run for days, literally. Cougar look like they can run but have no wind at all and hound races normally end within a half-hour or even less.

Hard to say what breed that critter is and what size, but unless the man is really tall it looks a bit like a Boerperd to me. I managed a couple of them when we lived in RSA and they were hardy cayuses.

Right now I have two quarter-horse crosses I'd stack up to a gemsbok though I'm not sure I would stack me the rider up to a gemsbok!

Larcher; do you know where this fellow stuck the gemsbok? As far as I have read, the classic stick is to knick the critter in the neck. It is all over pretty quickly just as it is when we stick butcher critters I'm sure. Aren't there still some clubs that ride down stag in France?

BTW: Looks like a Cold Steel "Bushman" knife stuck on that haft.

Francois is a member of such a club (equipage in French)

This mode of hunting is very active and trendy. More than 470 clubs in France, 17 000 hounds, 100 000 people following the chases. It's a tradition and a solid one. We even harbour English clubs since banning of hunting in UK.

3707 pictures seeable on this website :

Francois is yet hunting this way. He'll go hunting in Africa for a couple of weeks. I'll ask him as soon as he's back.
NB : Francois is 6 foot tall. NATUXO

For those who want to live the thrill and the music of the chase I have posted the pictures

and added a couple OF VIDEO CLIPS in the European hunting forum

When I was 20 or so years old I was seriously considering moving out of the area and pursuing this kind of hunting sport.
I ended up following a similar path on the motorcycle, and focusing on the motorsport and sporting women as the game in the chase instead of hunting and game animals.

I don't regret the years spent in the pursuit of my choices, but I can say that at this time in my life I'm still just as thrilled about this form of hunting.

Great stuff.

Cheers

In the photos of the hounds chasing the deer,
how does the deer get dispatched at the end
when it bails ?

The game is dispatched with a dagger sticked into the heart.
Look :

this hunter in the pond with water hip high is going and finishing a young stag with a dagger. One better has intestinal fortitude to play this game. Many get injured. But tradition first.

Sometimes when approach to the game on bay is too tricky a spear can be used mostly for big boars.

In particular circumstances, a short handy 12 gauge is used.

Especially when there are too many passers by who protest. For example when the stag or the boar seeks refuge in the middle of a village or a town and the crowd is not pro hunting. What shouldn't happen is the animal finding refuge in a church. No way to kill it.
Sometimes the game has mercy on for exceptional gallantry.

If You wish to get outfitted with this kind of hunt, first have a look at this website offering all what you need

Thanks, that's what I thought happene, I just couldn't see
any dead deer in the photos I looked at.

Here in Aus, the deer is shot after bailing.

In addition, pigs that are bailed or lugged with dog are stuck with a knife though the heart.

All very noble.

Thanks for a very interesting thread JB. Will the Mountain Nyala also be hunted with a spear?

We have to wait for Francois being back.
No chance he'll spend the weekend boar hunting with You.
We do have spear, if You're tempted, no sweat. During almost each of our last drives I had to stick a roe or a pig. Your help is welcomed.

Larcher:

On the gemsbok hunt, do you know if the critter was stuck while Francois was mounted or did he dismount to kill the animal?

You guys have a great thing going there.
