Kenya's Oryx-Adopting Lioness Does It Yet Again

East African Standard

For the sixth time, the headline-making lioness at the Samburu National Game Reserve has adopted yet another baby oryx.

The latest adoption saga was sighted by a tour-guide driver, at around mid-day near Larsens Airstrip within the lion rock area.

A receptionist at the Samburu National Reserve Lodge Lydia Mwangi called tourb offices to break the news of the latest adoption.

"This is another wonder. The lioness has adopted a baby oryx for the sixth time," said the General Manager of the Game Lodge, Mr Duncan Kiroro.

Kiroro estimated that the baby oryx could be three days old. The oryx' mother was seen hanging around but was not allowed, by the lioness, to suckle the baby.

The Samburu Game Reserve lioness took its first baby in January last year from its mother and nursed it for two weeks before it was snatched and devoured by a lion.

The second to fifth oryxes were adopted in February, March, May and October, in that order.

The Samburu lioness famed for adopting oryx calves has lost its latest ward which was reclaimed by its mother.

The headline-making lioness at the Samburu National Game Reserve had last week adopted yet another three-day old oryx baby. This was the sixth time the lioness had adopted an oryx in the game reserve.

The Samburu Intrepids Club Manager, Duncan Kiroro, told the East African Standard that the Oryx-adopting lioness released the baby oryx to suckle when its mother came around during the night but the mother and baby later disappeared .

Game rangers are closely monitoring the movements of the lioness, which they said is frantically looking for its lost 'baby'.

NitroX,

Lets make it a good story !
Maybe the lioness was almost killed by a gemsbuck and then told the gemsbuck "please don't kill me I will do anything"
And that anything was of course "ok you look after us and I will spare you"

Is this teh start of a fable or what ?

A bit like fast food take away. Carry a snack with you for a quick "bite" when you are feeling "peckish".

Samburu Lioness Now Goes for Baby Impala

The East African Standard
February 2, 2003

Mary Nzioka
Nairobi

The oryx -adopting lioness from the Samburu National Game Reserve has done it yet again, but this time it has gone for a baby impala.

The pair was spotted yesterday morning at 10.10 am between Larsens Camp and the Samburu Lodge. The Larsens Camp manager, Mr George Oluoch, together with his two colleagues, witnessed the adoption. The three were travelling from the Camp to the Samburu Lodge.

Oluoch told the Sunday Standard on the phone from the lodge that the lioness targeted the baby impala, which had been in the company of a herd of other impalas. "The lioness targeted one impala calf. My colleagues and I were baffled by this latest development," said Oluoch.

Oluoch said the impala's mother was seen hanging around but was chased away by the lioness.

The baby impala at one point tried to escape but it was over-powered by the lioness, added Oluoch. The lioness, nicknamed Kamuniak, has made headlines six times in the past by adopting baby oryxes.

The lioness and the baby Impala it adopted at Samburu Game Reserve are still moving together at Larsen camp.

The baby was spotted on Saturday morning at around 10.15am between Samburu Lodge and Larsen camp.

The Lioness last year adopted baby Orxy at Samburu National Game Reserve.

The National Reserve Senior Warden, Mr James Lesuyai, said the lioness and the baby Impala were seen together moving around Samburu Lodge.

Lesuyai said the Lioness targeted the baby, which had been in the company of a herd of other impalas before adopting it.

Lesuyai told the East African Standard on phone the baby is feeding on shrubs and grass while the Lioness nick-named "Kamuniak" on flesh at Samburu lodge.

He said the baby's mother has been seen hanging around but was being chased away by the Lioness.
