Dane - I don't see any reason why not - you must slug the bore of the .500 to see what size the cast bullets need to be. They should be sized or expanded to .001 to .002" larger than the groove diameter. RCBS makes an excellent 550gr. bullet (1/2 pure/1/2 WW metal) That bullet was exceptionally accurate in my .50 Alaskan Rolling Block up to 2,000fps.

To slug the bore, easiest is to use a .54 round ball, pure lead, and just pount/tap one into each of the muzzles, then poke it out onto a soft cloth. Measure the largest diameter of the 'slug' and that's the groove diamter you have to use. Once the 'slg' is almost flat on the muzzle, I use a piece of Ramin or maple or hickory dowel to push/pound it down into the muzzle, then poke it back out using a rod from the other end. It's easy to do. A 1" michrometer is better/more accurate than calipers, but calipers will work just fine.

Modern Alox/beeswax lubed can be used, either in a lube sizer or hand lubed. You may find the bullets don't need to be sized and you can shoot them as-cast. I prefer a mix of beeswax and vaseline for lube. 60BW/40%Vas. This lube owrks perfectly for black powder as well as smokeless powders, BTW and prevents leading to well over 2,000fps in smokeless loads. I'd use straight WW metal for the melt. You may add some tin if you want - some say it helps casting. I've never in 35 years had any problem with straight WW metal. Make sure there are no ZINC WW in the lead, nor any glue-on WW's as they are pure lead and will soften the alloy. Zinc WW in the melt will destroy the whole mix and can ruin a pot as well. Zinc in the mix makes it very difficult to cast good bullets.

Good luck. Lyman, Lee and RCBS all have relatively cheap moulds for 450 to 550gr. bullets. The RCBS 550gr. (they may call it a 500gr. or 520gr.) is the most accurate in my findings. The Lyman 520gr. is the second most accurate. I haven't tried the RCBS 450gr. FN- it might be the best overall - I don't know.

Daryl,

I have cast one heck of alot of wheel weights in my time. Fortunately I have not encountered any zinc wheelweights. How do you identify these?

Daryl

thank you for your answer i should try to slug the barrels, do i have to look for moulds with gas check or can i shot without them.We most use expanding bullets for hunting in sweden so im shall only practise with them speed up to 1500fps.

Dan

You might want to look at CBE-Cast Bullet Engineering for a bullet mould also. http://www.castbulletengineering.bigpondhosting.com/custom.htm They make a top quality mould at very reasonable prices.

Zinc wheel weights are ususlly maked ZN The will be hard and you shouldn't be able to scratch them with your finger nail. Also when you are smelting them they will float to the top of the molten lead. You want to keep your melting temeperature down so they don't melt into you lead and contaminate.

When you spot one set it aside and when you get 20 or 30 lbs worth of them put them in one the post office flat rate boxes and mail them to me and I'll make round ball for my mortars.

Dan - if you keep the speed down, you should be able to easily get away with a flat base, no gas check. I've not seen a comercial .50 cal. mould that has a gas check, althought I know there are custom moulds with them.
; The normal run of the mill mold like the RCBS heavy one has a very heavy base. I think this is a good thing, as it's generally more accurate (in my rifles) than the Lyman 520gr. Pick a powder that bulks up well, then use the foam or other 'filler's to create a 100% loading. This 'filler' will protect the bullet's base the same as a gas check would have - hense, gas checks are not needed. Cast and size the bullet .001" to .002" larger than the groove diameter and you'll not get leading. Use a good lube - SPG, Lyman BPGold, Lyman Moly, or mix your own - double boiler (one pot inside another pot of water) Beeswax/Vaseline in a 60:40 mix. The 60% beeswax seems to give a very good consistancy (viscosity) for both black pwoder and smokeless shooting. My .50 shot to 2,000fps with this home made lube, no leading. It gave 1 1/2" accuracy at 200 yards - tang sight peep and pin-head front sights off the bags using both smokeless and black powder - both runing around 1,500fps.

I suspect with reduced loads, you'll need a heavy bullet to help regulate the double. I might be 180 degrees off on that prediction.
