New to me 1968 Brno ZKK 602
      #119495 - 26/11/08 02:35 AM

I wanted to get a rifle to build a custom on. After looking through the forums, asking advice, I acquired my second Brno ZKK 602 in 375 H&H. I didn't want to use my first one as its a nice engraved model. This one came up, fellow before me says he only put 18 rounds down it, I took it all apart to clean it and its in GREAT shape. The follower spring is much tighter than my other one (1985 year) so I don't think its been shot much. Plus it has the ever coveted peep sight, and a very nice set trigger.

Not sure, but I think I would like to build a 404 Jeffery on it. Depending on how much needs changed. What calibers can be built on the 375 bolt face?

Convert it to 404!!! I just got my CZ550 Safari Magnum back, changed from 375 to 404. It is great. Recoil is very mild, not much more than the 375, it felt to me. Gunsmith had no problems, as only minor changes needed to bolt face, and cartridge is roughly the same length. Balance is similar, as I had the barrel made to 24 inch length, a bit shorter than the standard 375 barrel length. I had the original sights put on the new barrel. Further testing will see what it can do.

I purchased this rifle with the specific intent to do a custom on. I have 3 375's (this one included) and a 458 Lott Win model 70 (Which I hope to trade for another Brno down the road) The 404 Jeffery has always intrigued me. I'll have to find a source for brass and I think I'll give it a go once I nail down a good gunsmith.

You've got a great rifle there. I had one in 375H&H which I had rebored & chambered to 416 Rigby. I'm not exactly kicking myself for selling it but I've got bruises on my bruises.
When I see a pic of one like yours the regret goes sky high. I reckon they're a beaut rifle just the way they are, the stock shape works well & looks better.Maybe a Pachmayr decelerator. & the peep could do with opening up a little. I removed the folding leaf rear sight from mine & used the peep alone. Other than a bit of smoothing up which use does anyway, I can't see they need a great deal of improvenment or customizing. Some don't like the safety. I never found it to be any hassle, you get uesd to it. .404 Jeffery will be a neat calibre for it. Congrats.

Thank you, the safety is a non-issue for me, feels very natural. I'm getting rid of my Model 70 Safari classic and replacing it with a Brno, then all the safety's will be the same. The Winchester is nice, but I want to go all Brno. I found a source for 404 brass today, Norma brass, $52/20, its expensive, but its available.

Thaks a lot- I was just getting over my stupidity for seeling mine off in 1975. - Thanks a lot - Great find though I'd leave it alone. It's perfect just as it is.

I used to get 1 1/2" groups from prone at 100 yards with a tight sling using 270gr. cast bullets and 23gr. of SR7625 - just the stock peep sight - no scope.

Daryl,

Because of the low round count and condition, I had thought about leaving it be. But I want a 404 and my other Brno is just to nice to change as well. My '85 has factory engraving, and the fancier factory stock on it. I've never shot a rifle with this type of peep sight, (or set trigger) so I'll take it to the range when the weathers nice, and give it a go, if its a shooter, I may just have to have a custom stock done up for it and leave it as is. I have a ZKK 600 coming now with peep sights, but I don't think there actions are big enough to do a 404 on (Action sizes elude me). Decisions decisions....

A friend of mine that I met over in another gun forum told me this:

ZKK600 (Standard Action) 30-06, 270W, 7x64, 9.3x62
7x57, 8x57S 8x64.8 and 10.75x68 - Most common rifle.

ZKK601 (Short Action) 222R, 222R Mag, 223R, 243W, 308W, 300Savage, 35R, 220 Swift and 257 Roberts - Rarest rifle.

ZKK602 (Magnum Action) 375 H&H

I've heard of some special orders......other calibers I've seen....458W, 404 Jeffery and 416 Rigby. Anything else would be custom built...I've worked on a 458 Lott and a 505 Gibbs. Seen a few 550 Gibbs advertised

He's my source for Brno info, that's why I acquired a ZKK 602 for the conversion. I would LOVE a ZKK 601 in 257 Roberts, but I've never seen one, I ask at every gun shop I visit, and nobody's ever seen one, there either not available in Canada, or those who have them are taking them to the grave.

Wot Darryl said, I know its not ours to tell you what to do & I with my history of altering mine, but I only did so because the barrel was pitted both in & out, otherwise I'd have never touched it. Yours looks so tidy & original that IMHO it would be a shame to alter it, but I guess if it was done sympathetically it might be OK We'll want pics though, mind.

Another vote to keep it as-is.

Get a CZ550 and lop and chop, mod and such into a .404 or anything else you like.

Just my $.02...

Great gun regardless!

Its a good point, maybe I can find one with a shot out barrel, though it seems guys don't shoot the big bores much, mostly safe queens. (not mine, I shoot em all!) I can order a CZ in 404, A guy close to me (Dealer) has one in stock, looks like nice wood to:

CZ 550 "Safari Classic" Gloss.404 Jeffery In stock$2899

What would be the cost for the average custom build?

I've never had a custom before, so feel free to chime in, he's my guesstimate:

Brno ZKK 602 - $795
Custom Stock - $2000 (Something like Luxus Walnut)
Custom Barrel - ???
Reblue - ???
Bolt Face open up and action job: ???
Whatever else needs done: ???

Plus put it all together, final fit and finish, I'm guessing I'd be well over what the CZ is. No peep sight though

Trev - you missed the .358 Norma Magnum. I purchased mine (cold stone stock) in 1972 & used it that fall-winter for coyotes. Man - those 250 Speers at 2,840fps would sure open up a coyote. In 1974 I bought an unfired .375 barrel from a fellow for $100.00 - lot of money then - It headspaced perfectly with the sights straight up and down - perfectly matched my action. In 1974, I used it with cast bullets for 3 position competition shooting.
Later that year, I built up a full bore .038 match rifle for position, and kept the .375 for deer/moose/bear. I only ever shot deer with it after moving South - eat right up to the hole - 270 Power Points, 70gr. IMR 4064 - bug-hole groups.

Nice board you've got there. Exquisite!

Awesome find. These are really cool guns from a by-gone era. What is the 3rd 375 you have ??? My vote, pending on the 3rd, would be to keep them scoped Monte carlo gun pictured and this new one as is. A pair, scoped and unscope.

Do you have a reborer available up north ???? I saw a CZ 375 rebored and chambered in 416 Rem back when they first came out. Might be a option with your ZKK and maintain the factory barrel, sights, etc.....

The CZ550 is the same (mostly) as the older ZKK series of actions. A factory 404 runs about 2000us.

That's not my stick of wood...yet. I don't want to buy the wood until I'm sure what I'm doing.

The 3rd 375 H&H Arrives today, its a Ruger #1 Stainless Steel and Laminate, I'm not a laminate fan, but the gun is nice, and the price was right (Traded for) so hopefully I can trade the grey laminate stock for a nice wood one and have a stainless/wood Ruger #1. I've got a Ruger #1 International (Full stock) in 30.06 and I love it, hopefully the 375 Tropical is as nice, didn't get a chance to handle it as it was a over the internet trade.

I'm using IMR 4064 for my 300 Nosler, but I have some 270GR PP SN Woodleigh and 300GR RN SN Woodleighs coming. I've also found 350GR Woodleighs, but would there be enough case capacity with that big of a bullet?

I am no Ruger #1 fan. The trigger, scope, LOP, my eye, my neck never seem to get in a rythym to hit well with. That said enjoy your new find, cool stuff.

I use the 350 Woodliegh's with 70 H4350 for around 2200-2300fps. I have found this to be plenty of velocity, hell anything over about 2000 is good with me.

With 270's I use 70gr RL15
With 300's I use 64gr Varget

load the 350s and zero the "new" Zkk for them and use the 270 and 300 in the scoped gun. When you get tired of the #1 sell that and the M-70 and get a CZ in 404 and one in 458. Then all you need is a 500jeffery and a 257bob

Was just thinking back, but I remember a interveiw with Tony Sanchez Arino in that the last few hundred or so Elephant he took he used but 2 rifles, a iron sighted 375 and a scoped 375 with set trigger. Just a thought. He is a 500 and a 416 fan as well but..............

I like the #1's, I have another one, seems to fit my build good. The other one I have is a international (full stock) in 30.06, its one of my favorite rifles to shoot. The Gray Laminate isn't that bad as you mention, I'll keep it this way for a bit, range test this weekend, go from there. Then we'll see how the new Brno with peep sights shoots, and if it does, it will stay a 375, if it doesn't, its going 404.

About #1's - I have a .218Bee (6,500 rounds so far) that may just wear my buddie's .375 #1 barrel. We pulled it to make a .17 AckHornet for him. The .375 barrel seems to want to go on my #1. I'd lay odds it hasn't been fired more than about 500 to 1,000 times - barely broken in.

Why so many 375 H&H's? I love that Ruger No.1, though. If it were I (which it isn't), I'd go with that beautiful CZ 550 in 404 Jeffery at your nearby dealer's. My CZ 550 is in 458 WM which is a true Big Bore... the 375 H&H isn't quite there. It's somewhere between medium and big, according to most authorities. I've nothing against 375 H&H's... I've owned two of 'em - including an M70. But "variety is the spice of life", it's been said and I think you should go with your initial instincts: a true Big Bore... the 404 Jeff. Just my take on it.

Well, I bought my first Brno a while ago, it was a (from what I understand) Rare engraved model, Everyone told me I would be on my @$$ with a black eye the first time I shot it (I'm a small guy, 130lbs soaking wet). I took it out to the range, and I loved it, the recoil is just perfect for me. Its a heavy rifle mind you, but its pleasant to shoot. After that the one with peep sights came up for sale. I've wanted a custom for a while, and don't really like my Model 70's, so I put my 338 Federal Model 70 up for sale to fund the new Brno with peep sights, I purchased the Brno, but before I could sell the Model 70 338, a guy offered me the brand new Ruger #1 in trade for my Model 70, so instead of selling it to fund the second Brno, I traded and ended up with 3 375's! Oops. My wife however is very forgiving, and she doesn't mind at all, so I'll either convert the peep sight Brno, or keep it as is, time will tell.

I'm not sure about buying the CZ Safari classic yet, the bolt handle bugs me being curved back (nothing functional wise, but I know what I like) And I really like the Brno's, so I've got my Model 70 458 Lott up for trade for another Brno on another gunsite, if someone has a Brno in 458 or 416 there willing to trade up for, then I'll have all Brno's in my Bolt guns (and a 1908 Mauser)

Out with the Winchesters in with the Brno's!

Brno obsessed,

-Trev

I just purchased one of these for the Ruger #1, shame its not stainless so it won't match, but oh well. I'm wondering if I shouldn't order a red fiber optic sight to go on the front as well. Looks neat anyway.

"I traded and ended up with 3 375's!" not a bad thing, worse things could happen......like having 3 remingtons.

"Out with the Winchesters in with the Brno's!" again not a bad thing.

I have the same NECG rear sight on a Ruger #1 .375 H&H. I do use the red fiber optic and it really "glows" in the glooming of the day. It has not been in the right place at the right time to be look at on hair but I am sure it would do well.

Well the deal is done, here's what I ended up with:

Top one is my original, 1985 Factory Engraved 375 H&H that started my love of Brno's
Middle one is my newest (Traded my Model 70 Safari Express 458 for) 1985 Brno, in 416 Rigby EDIT ****Almost forgot, I got a set of rings, an Extra 375 H&H Barrel, and a set of extra express rear sights in the deal as well***
Bottom one is my new 1968 Set Trigger, peep sights 375 H&H

So I have triplets!

All in all, since I didn't like the Model 70's, I think I ended up pretty good, now all my serious guns have the same safety's, same feel, same scope mounts, ect.

Now..to find one in 505 Gibbs...
