Purchases from a UK auction house
      #119387 - 24/11/08 01:57 AM

Hi,

I have found an item that I am interested in coming up for auction at the Dec. 3 Bonahms auction at Knightsbridge and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with what is entailed in bidding from the USA and what is entailed and costs of getting the item shipped into the USA if I were to win the bid. Any information greatly appreciated.

I need the same information too.
I inquired to Thad Scott regarding an upcoming Holt's auction, and he made every attempt to dissuade me from bidding - interesting, seeing that he is a Holt's US representative!
He claimed it amounts to about $1K per gun in expenses and a six month wait to get get the gun.
Is this true?

get a pro to look the gun over for you, the money you pay for the service is nothing compared to the risk you take buying from a photo.

mr. bramble on this site offer this service, and he is very good.

best regards

peter

I will be at the Bonhams viewing for another forum member and two of his friends.

I will also be at Holts Dec sale, as I am at all of their sales.

Regards

Mr Bramble,

I may need to enlist your services if I can find out the costs associated with getting the gun to me in the USA, but if the cost is approx $1000 per gun it would be cost prohibitive I would would just have to pass on the idea as I am only looking at 1 gun & its' not a real expensive gun, do you have any experience with shipping guns to the USA and is it as expensive as Huvius was quoted?

I imported a gun this spring from Christies and went thru British Sporting Arms in Millbrook NY as the importer. They were quite a bit cheaper than others I spoke with. The cost was probably close to 1k when I was finished. It took about 60 days to get the gun here.

If the gun is bought cheap enough or you want it bad enough go fo it.

Also consider the manufacture date of the gun.
Pre 1899 guns can be shipped without the need for an FFL, which simplifies things a bit if it does not ship through a customs house here in the US. In fact, it may be possible for the auctioneer to ship a pre 1899 gun directly to you - I'm not sure. If so, this could cut the cost dramatically.
Holt's have this on their website:

Want to thank all forum members for their advise, especially Bramble & Mike for guiding me through it, even though being outbid I learned some things!
