"Naren requested that I post a photo of the HEYM splinter forend."

And the difference between a Heym Splinter Foreend
and any other type is ???????????

Can't see a whole lot of difference.

I don't think he had seen one on a HEYM.

Unless you request it, the standard forend is the semi-beavertail. So, odds are that's what he's encountered.

Something looks out of whack to me. Either that is a monster barrel or tiny thin action, splinter fore end or not.

Looks fine to me.

They (Splinter Foreends) do look a bit funny on Bigger Bore Doubles, especially on 470's and upwards, 500's etc.

Merkels also look the same way, small action, big barrels.

To my eye, continental splinters do run longer than on English guns. Compare this to many London guns posted on the photos section to see what I mean.

They also tend to run in parallel with the barrels for a longer distance before cutting inward at the end (looking from the bottom). English splinters tend to taper up to the barrels quicker owing to their shorter length.

I had a Genossenschaft double with a forend like this Heym, and I must confess it did feel good compared to my English guns. I guess I tend to run my left hand further out when shooting offhand, so with my Greener for instance, I usually have quite a bit of barrel in my left.

I wouldn't, it was a valid question / point.

It's just I have about 6 470NE or 500 NE double rifles
to compare it to and it just looked normal to me.

In fact, it looks a shit load better done than my Merkel 470NE
and from the times I have held Heym's, I'm was not a fan of them.

Huvius it isn't/wasn't the fore end that looked small to me it's the action in relationship to the barrel that looks odd.

I see what you're saying in the second photo. It's the angle at which the photo was taken: the barrels are a lot closer to the camera in that photo than the action. Because they're closer, they look bigger than they really are.

And I agree that the Continental forends are longer than the older English forends.

Remember that a British splinter fore-end exists purely to house the ejectors (if fitted) and to prevent the barrels falling off the front of the firearm during reloading!

The forward hand grips the barrels well forward of the fore-end during firing.

...and yes, they do get hot!

The long fore-ends of many Continental doubles, and the Heym pictured, are a sensible compromise. For those who like to grip the barrels, the long fore-end might get in the way, but it would give some protection from hot barrels.

Beavertails are for sissies!

That is what I was getting at. Although my contenental doubles are and were all small bores and the barrels didn't seem to get that hot. It is nice to be able to open your left hand to allow the wood to rest in your palm to cool the fingers.

To me, though, the English style splinter is another example of how the British just have a knack for making rifles look "right". Just as they have done with singles and bolt guns since their inception.

I agree with most things said here. The Europien doubles rifle's forends tend to be longer, than the Britt rifles. Also one rarely sees a beavertail on either of the Euro, or Britt double rifles made for domestic trade, the exception being an occasional SIMI-BEAVERTAIL, notably on the Heyms, and I can't think of even one from the UK. The heat problem was handeled in the UK, by the use of s slip-on hand guard, that still allowed the shooter to hold the barrels rather than the fore-end wood. The forend wood is, as someone above said, there only to house the ejectors, and cocking levers, and a balance point to carry the rifle by one's side. Most bevertail double rifles you will find will be in the USA, regardless of where they are made, because Americans had become used to seeing the shotguns made this way, so ordered their double rifles that way as well.

This habit of B/T forends in the USA is from the older compition shotguns where there was a real need for a heat sink between the hand and the barrels. This isn't a problem with a double rifle, used for what it was made for, HUNTING! One rarely shoots more that four shots in a run with a double rifle at game, and in most case only one shot, starting with a cool barrel set.

The Britt splinters are in my view "TOO" short, and the Euro double "TOO" long! I like to take half the difference between the two, for mine, and modify the fore-ends on my Euro doubles. This is why I like the lever latch for the fore-end, because shortening the fore-end wood doesn't interfere with the mechanism, as it does with the plunger type!

I like the Heyms about as well as any "NEW" rifle on the market today, and far better than some! I also like the Merkel 140-1, and 2s with a little customizing, of the fore-end, and the addtion of a good recoil pad, along with a little sight work. The only thing I can think of that is uglier than a beavertail fore-end, is a Blaser double rifle from end to end!

This photo with barrels in the shade shows the placement of my forward hand when shooting the .400 Jeffery. The rust-blueing is almost completely worn through. Maybe time for a refurb, now that I think of it!

So Guys, what is your ideal length of fore-end?
I would like about 15mm off that Heym fore-end.
