Horn Blowing...
      #118936 - 16/11/08 03:49 AM

Well, last evening Sonny pulled off a winner...as usual.

Anyhow, he has a knack for killing big-racked whitetails. He's been hunting alone now for a few years and has knocked over some way back in the boonies by himself, with the extraction a mighty feat alone, but this one was a breeze!

He was sick as a dog {you can't tell in the picture...}, lost his voice and hacking and coughing, but took off from college and barely had time to get to his previously-scouted spot covering a scrape in a dark patch of woods not too far from the house here. In fact, he changed into his hunting clothes on the side of the road by his pickup before he headed into the woods, and forgot his boots to-boot!

Nevertheless, his instincts paid off. After sitting under a tree for about 1 1/2 hours, he got about a 70-yard shot thru a narrow lane in the timber. Slightly angled shot {exit shows in the pic}, critter ran about 20 yards and dropped. Pulped the lungs and clipped the liver. Rifle; Ruger M77MKII Left Hand. Scope; Burris 3x9. Caliber/Load; .30-06, 180 grain Winchester Bulk Round Nose bullet {a great bullet} over H4350 powder.

I had just got home from sitting a stand on the ranch when he arrived and dragged me out to go collect it. The Rascal!

Best of all {for me }, I could just barely get the ATV to the thing and we got it out whole!

Not quite his biggest, but yeah, I'm proud of him!

Nice 5 point buck - lot bigger than Dad's little deer! Young enough to be great eating still.

Nicely done, Sonny. Tell me that with his "game" knee that you didn't make dad haul it up. How much "meat" did you get on that beauty? Gotta love my Ruger M77 MkII! I'd like to have one in 30=06 to go with my 6.5x55. I'll have to look up those 180gr. bullets. My 03A3 2 groove barrel loves the Sierra Match King Hollow Points for target. I wonder how those round nose would work in that one. Study hard, Sonny, and don't forget the little things...like your boots.

Every good and perfect gift comes down from Above,

Larry, the kid's weighed 200 on the hoof. The buck I shot earlier weighed 180 gutted. Daughter's doe went 145 on the hoof.

Thanks Dale, you are right.

Here's his first deer when he was twelve.
