How it's done...
      #118397 - 06/11/08 11:54 AM

For the benefit of the multinationals here who have never hunted deepwoods whitetails, I decided to sort-of photo document the whole thing today.

Some time ago I made a "Blitz Blind", a seat I dug out at the base of a comfy-back-rest tree. The "blind part" is the thin screen of branches I cut and stick in the ground in the front of it. It works. Wind is in my face. Rifle is my Husqvarna M146 in 9.3x57. Bullet is Hornady 225 Spire Point .375 caliber sized down to fit the grooves of my 9.3. Muzzle speed is 2540 fps.

Got in the blind at 6:00, in pitch dark. Temperature about 28 degrees F. At 7:45 saw flashes of brown to my right, just glimpses as a couple critters ran thru the timber. Up went the gun and nestled well, elbows on knees {my favorite shot}, I waited for a doe to pass a clearing {meaning, a television-sized hole in the thick stand of trees, just visible at a little less than 100 yards thru the dim light}. I then saw horns and then a buck who angled and ran away from me. Crosshairs just behind ribs and break trigger. Before the gunshot quit echoing I herd a crash and knew he was down. He went about 16 yards. Bullet was found up by his throat, 28 inches penetration.

Here is what taking the shot looked like:

This was a big deer {small 4x4 rack} for our parts. Later he weighed in at 180 lbs, gutted. A grunt and sweater getting him out as I was alone.

Looking back from where he was hit, this is what you see. You can just make out the bit of orange at my blind. It is threading the needle all the way. There ain't no such thing as a "brush bullet".

I didn't feel like quartering him, so it was dragging all the way. Little by little. Think pleasant thoughts... Up, down, around. Gonna be here a while... A helicopter would be nice. If you've never done it by yourself, ask your wife to lie down and act like dead weight, then toss a dally around her feet and tug her around the front lawn for a while. It's harder if you live in the mountains. Drag her over the lawn mower or a set of lawn furniture if you want to get a feel for what it's like to have logs in your way.

I carry an axe to hook the drag ropes to, then that way I can cut my thru obstacles, too. After a few hours, getting close to the steep slope and the waiting winch here.

Final hundred feet by winch.

Then, to get 180 lbs up on the 4-wheeler, a story in itself...

Loaded and ready for the drive home.

Finally, here's a link for the ballistics involved...

Nicely done. Super deer and good performance from the 9.3.

Nice buck! You certainly earned every steak on that one!

Thanks to all.

Re: Horses, sometimes. Sometimes not.

This hunt took place about 3 miles from home. If I ride there it takes a lot longer to get there and then I have to tie the critter and hope nobody else comes by and shoots it, loosens hobbles, unties it, etc. If I trailer it, I can let it stand in the trailer, but then have to climb down off the mountain to get it a couple miles away {closest I can get to the trailer}.

Plus, inside the timber, there is a lot of stuff on the ground {blowdowns, etc} and some of these must be cleared for the horses. In fact, sometimes it is more work to clear stuff for the horses than it is to leave it in place.

This drag was between 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile and took me a few hours to get it to within the last 125 or so feet to rope and cable where I winched it up to the ATV. No way I could have dragged it myself up to the ATV.

I've quartered deer before, and nearly did so with this one.

Basically, we make it up as we go along.

Nice shot and congratulations!!! Terrain like that really makes you think twice about taking certain shots, doesn't it?

Actually, there are quite a few areas where I won't shoot elk because the extraction can be impossible or effectively so. Generally, though, getting anything out around here requires a lot of work. No driving the bakkie up to the critter and loading it whole as I saw all over Africa!

{Except for parts of my ranch, where I attempt to duplicate easy African hunting as much as possible! }

How it's done...and well done, indeed. That blind ought to be good for your back. Looks like you need to save your back for hauling such a huge deer. Trophy shot! I empathize. Hauling my whitetail down the Virginia mountain through deadfalls was quite the chore. I can only imagine what you had to do moving that great deer. Nice Rod 9.3!

Great hunt...

Agree with your analogy of quartering...which is what we do with about 90% of what we shoot--quarter and bone --throw it in the packs and haul it back to the rigs...IMHO, much easier than the drag if it is very much of a distance...

Looks like you are enjoying life...even after BO...

RIPP: I didn't mentioned above that this animal is being donated to the local Food Bank for the needy. I donate one big one every year, and it has to go to the butcher whole, not cut up. I have to get it home and skin it and then haul the carcass to him, and then he cuts and wraps and the Food Bank collects it.

Tinker: It gave me a bunch of trouble, mostly as I had to try to keep the kneecap from sliding around as it makes me want to puke when it does, really nauseating. Otherwise, I don't have much pain except a dull ache. Stitches were pulled Monday and it is healing well. Falling on it is the biggest threat at this point. I'm CAREFUL and slow.

Worse was on Sunday eve in a driving rain. My youngest shot her first deer, a big doe just at dusk. I was there with her, and we had a long track. A nice big chunky one, tho, at 145 lbs on the hoof {we brought it out whole as that was shot on my ranch here and tho shot in thick timber and died in same, we were able to slide it down the wet timber and on to a track where we got the ATV. Needless to say, she's psyched!!! }

Now, 2 down, 4 to go for the rest of us in the family.
