"But then Ian Gibson was yelling to run, that another cow was coming and the furious screams and trumpeting cut through the focus on the downed cow and the rifle was empty and I was off like a scalded cat to put some distance behind me and reload on the run. Off 50 meters and pulling up beside a tree, thumbing cartridges into the rifle, listening to the screams of the cow as she hunted for revenge, I waited for whatever was to come. She had found one of the tracker’s hats on the ground and attacked that, but it was only a momentary distraction until she took up the scent to find one of us. She found Ian who had stood his ground and ..... "

Great story...Ian Gibson was my Ph this past spring in Zim.
Ian and I got into some cows one day as well that were very agitated ---they were screaming, coming out of the mopane and literally ripping brush and throwing it at us..Iam said he had never seen anything like it..we finally packed it in and left as he felt if we were to shoot one we would probably have to shoot 1 or 2 more to get out with our hides...
I am meeting Ian at the SCI show in Reno this year...he is then coming back up to spend a week up here with me in Montana...should be quite a shock to the system for him..as temps will be very cold at that point..

The double rifle as far as I know is a French Chapuis. It comes with a single trigger mechanism that is flawless in operation, lovely rifle to shoot.
I shot my ele on our recent trip with a custom 500 Jeffrey, built on a Johanssen Magnum Express action, pushing Woodleigh 600 grain solids at about 2,200 FPS.
Cheers, Rob

Are you happy with Johns work and how did the rifle perform?

A great read.I have taken 3 elephant, all with a 500 Nitro double and am a great fan of the heavy bullet. The last bull I took a few weeks ago in Zim was a frontal brain shot at 18yds-the first went a touch high,as they do,but the next shot a few seconds later brained him.I agree with most of the article but am a firm double rifle devotee

I reviewed this again this morning and see Ian is still using the severly beaten Winchester model 70 in .458 Winchester...no blueing left and stock cracked..
He stated he had a new one waiting for him here in the US --but was a big hassle to get it back into Zim--lots of paperwork he had stated...
