I FINALLY DID IT!!
      #118267 - 04/11/08 07:24 AM

Well, I did it. I took the plunge and bought my first big bore. A Ruger #1 in 458WM. Got it off GA. The just got my payment this morning and it should ship tomorrow (hopefully). Ordered all my reloading supplies this morning so I should be able to shoot it by the end of the week. I plan to load 350gr. Hornady RN to the neighborhood of 2350fps give or take a bit. That should be pretty mild (relatively of course) in recoil and will be more than enough for anything I'm likely to hunt with it.

Im so excited I can't stand it. It's gonna be a loooong few days waiting on my new baby to get here.

Congrats! I know how you feel, I got my first big/medium bore a little less than a year ago.

The Sierra and Remington 300 gr HP bullets at 2500 fps are excellent for deer out to 200 yards. They expand and penetrate well, and are very accurate. Unnecessary of course, but they are effective none the less.

Blood-

Congratulations.
You'll find soon enough that the .458 isn't anything of the recoil beast many folk assume it is.
That Hornady model #4502 is a fantastic bullet.
I run it at 2400+fps in my Whitworth Express rifle. They're accurate, dependable, and cheap.
Buy a box of 500 so that you get a pile all from the same lot.
That way you can develop your accurate load and forget about it.

Take a look at downrange performance of 350 vs 300 grain bullets, notice how much more energy the 350 keeps further out than the 300 does.
I'd thought of having numerous bullet weight loads for the .458, but since the #4502 is so consistent and accurate, I quit screwing around with the others once I got my 2400+fps load, and left it at that.

Have fun with your new rifle.
Let us know how it does for you.

It does not matter how many big bores you have, you always get excited when a new one is on the way. I have been doing it for 25 years and it never gets old. You will find that it is a serious disease, the only cure is another bigbore. Sadly the cure is only temporary. You will need at least a yearly booster. Congradulations.

Good going!

Your #1 458 WM is a nice rifle. You will probably want to replace the factory "recoil pad" with something like a Decel or Limbsaver...the stock ones are thin and rock hard! On my #1 Lott I also dressed the trigger and safety with emory cloth to take away the sharp edges. These rifles are usually very accurate and you will have a ball shooting it!

Congratulations!

Last summer I got a Ruger #1 in 450/400 NE 3" and now I'm paying on layaway for a Ruger #1 in 458 Lott.
I'd always wanted a Ruger number one, if I could, I'd own many more. Be sure and tell us what you think of the rifle- shooting it- the recoil- anything you experience. This might be important, because something could go wrong and you'd mistakenly think the Big Bore was not for you, when it may well be another factor entirely, like stock fit. I might try a different pad, but in the past a fairly hard pad was preferable to me than one too soft. I'll be curious to see what you think.

I picked up my new (to me) gun yesterday. It's nicer than I expected. With the exception of one tiny white spot on the barrel, which I knew about when I bought it, it looks brand new. You REALLY have to look to even see the spot. I'm sure it will get many more dings and scratches. The wood's rather plain but that's ok. I won't feel bad when it gets dinged up. I've got 20 rounds loaded with 350gr. Hornady RN with 2 different powders (H322 & RL-7) ready for chronographing. Can't get to the range for another week though

Anyway, for my question. I need a replacement front sight for it. I can't even see the stock sight in good light. It's just too small. I was thinking a larger Ivory (white) bead would be best. Does anyone know where I can get a nice, larger bead replacement for the #1?

Thanks for all the help and information that's been posted on this forum over the years. I'll try to post pics and a range report when I can get them.

Blood,

I put a large white bead from NECG on mine, and like it.

Take care, Tom
