Double Barrel 50-90 Penetration Testing
      #118242 - 04/11/08 01:00 AM

I had a 50-90 DOUBLE BARREL built for me. 20 inch barrels. I finally got around to do some penetration testing with it. All shots were at 50 yards.

Two bales of wet hay. Two layers of rough cut (therefore true) 2 by 8 inch boards.

Loads:
525 Grain Woodleigh Round Nosed over 70.5 Grains Reloder 15
435 Grain flat nosed Performance Cast over 70 Grains Reloder 15
435 Grain flat nosed Performance Cast over 60 Grains Reloder 15

Blew through the hay and through both layers of the rough cut lumber.

I did the same test with my 54 Cal Lyman Trade muzzle loader using pure lead .530 round ball over 90 grain sof 3 F powder. The round balls got buried in the LAST 2 by 8 board.

Altogether: IMPRESSIVE.

Those round balls did well. To add perspective to the round balls and too, the .50 cal slugs in comparrison, at 170 yards impact, launched at almost the same muzzle speed, a pure lead .535" round ball punched through an inch of wet, but hollow hair, 1/4" skin, 1" of connective tissue, muscle and fat, penetrated a 3/8" thick moose rib exiting the centre of the rib to punch though the left lung, centre the 10" to 12" diameter heart full or 1/2 full of blood, exit the heart and punch through the right lung, then through the 3/4" thick muscle between the off-side ribs, 1" of connective tissue, fat and muscle layer underneath the hide, stretching the hide out some 12" but lacking the powder to punch through it, getting slapped back against that connective tissue and stop. The moose bolted, dropping 40 yards from impact site, mid-stride, bled out into his own cavity.

: Those .50 cal. slugs of Yogi's are indeed impressive big game bullets.

Actually I mistyped---the Woodleighs are 535 GRAIN (not 525 grain).

And yes I was impressed with the .530 lead round balls. To pass through 2 wet and very tight bales of hay and a true 2 by 8 board and then get buried in the second 2 by 8 was astonishing.

I will say the 50-90 double with the heavy load is the setup I would want if a dangerous game was charging. Wow.

Wow! sounds great. Tell us more about the rifle - who made it? How does the action work? Any special features you like over others?

Jason Simpkins built my 50-90 Double rifle. He used an older Merkel 12 gauge. He used PacNor highest grade 50 cal barrels and sleeved those in. The barrels are short at 20 inches and the barrels are topped off with Express Sites.

The gun shoots very very well. Although the barrels are 20 inches it is a 75+ yard gun all day long. My eyes aren't as good as they were or it would be a 100 yard iron site gun.

I've always wanted an ultimate stopper gun. The guns balances very well and is fantastic to carry. It weighs about 9 pounds. But it packs a heck of a punch.

The 50-90 cases with Reloader 15 powder and those bullets mentioned above is in the vicinity of Light Nitro 500 Dangerous Game load.

Do you have any idea of what the velocities are? What kind of groups can be shot with it at 50 and 75 yards? Where are the pictures. You have to share those to really impress us! Where is Jason Simpkins from ? Bob H.

Velocities with the heavy loads are over 2000 FPS. Jason regulated the barrels at 2 inch groups at 75 yards.

Pictures were posted here in the photos section when I first got the gun earlier this year. I can email pictures if anyone wants. Jason is in CO.

I have not chrono'd the loads myself and I have not tested her to the limits but i shoot at my 50 yard range in my "yard" and I get consistent 2 inch groups OFF HAND.

I am still playing with soft loads and heavy loads. I sue Woodleighs for the heavy laods and performance cast for light loads. This gun I can shoot for about a $1.10 to $1.50 a shot. That is a little better than the $450.00 for a box of 20 for EXPRESS 500 factory loaded boolits.(!) haha!

Plus I love the look of the Older Merkels... beautiful wood and metal. This gun I would pick over just about any under $20K newly made gun.

I am quite intrigued by your double, Yogi000, althought I'd prefer slightly longer tubes.

Up here, tradexcanada has a vast aray of double guns including the hammer Husky's that might be suitable for black powder level loads. Any time you can pick up a 1/2 descent double, over-under or side by side, for $250.00 or less, is a good day, especially when one is willing to build on it.

I was thinking one of those 16 bore Husky's might be a great gun for a round ball gun all in it's own, with tubes shortened to 24" or 26" and sights installed.

Daryl--- I share your enthusiasm for almost any double gun and as we have found these double round ball throwers can be amazingly accurate and worthy too.

My shorty 50-90 I currently load with Reloder 15 or I do an even lighter hitting load using Accurate 5744 powder under 425 Grain Performance Cast bullets that nudges the shoulder about like what a 243 will! It is a great load for whitetail deer or for target work, especially practicing fast follow-up shots.

I plan to load some brass up with some 2F real black powder soon to see how she does with real black.

What do you have against 20 inch barrels?
