Hunting Season 2008 has begun...
      #118112 - 02/11/08 01:59 AM

Hunting season in the west has begun in my state..

Was lucky enough to take off opening weekend with my son and good friend. Set up my wall tent in a badlands type area that I have hunted for 17 straight years...

My son took a 4 point muley opening day...while not a monster, he was very happy and if he is happy, I am happy...he has endure a bad medical condition throughout most of the year..so for him to even be out and about is truly a blessing....

I was able to snag a turkey one morning which made for a very tasty meal over the grill...

Plan to head back in a week or so for a little solo hunting now that others have filled their tags..for me, this is one of the most relaxing parts of the entire year...walk out of the tent in the morning with the coyotes yelping...and in deer country immediately...lucky in deed....

Ripp

P.S. ---OH, 93x57--yes, we did smoke a couple of yotes as well in your honor..

Congratulations to both of you! Thanks for sharing your photos and story. I've taken a nice Pronghorn buck this year in Wyoming and am going Boar hunting next week. After that, it's deer season here in Pennsylvania.

Man, you made my day!!

Congrats to your son!

Nice job and a freezer full, too!

Also, nice turk. We got ours a while back as that season ends Oct 31.

As for the coyotes, my heart goes pitter pat.

I think that's a pretty nice deer! What turkey species have you got? It looks different than easterns.

Merriams...is the turkey type...

As to the deer...the reason I may have seemed a bit down is that I knew of a pretty cool non-typical in the area..wanted to get my son on him...but hey, if he is happy --I'm happy..

Heading out tomorrow afternoon for a few days alone in the wall tent--getting some fire wood tonight--it has gotten a bit chilly here..done in the teens overnight with highs in upper 30's F to low 40's...mule deer are starting to rut...so should see lots of deer moving...

Take care,

Ripp

GROUND SHRINKAGE, Reversed.

My hunting has been limited this year by my bad knees. Probably going to do the knee replacement before the year is out.

I have been limiting my hunting this year to walking a weedy fence line between an alfalfa field and wheat stubblefield, a distance of about 2 miles. By time I get to the far end my knees hurt pretty good and walking is pretty hard. Felt pretty good this morning so decided when I got to the end of the fenceline, to head out across the alfalfa field. It was 4 hours and about 5 miles until I got to the pick up point. The wife picked me up and told me she had seen the landowner and he asked that I stop by. I really wanted to go home and rest my knees but when the person who gives you permission to use his land ask you to stop in, you stop in. We drove over to his house and on the way saw two deer laying in a weed patch about 400 yards from the road.

I looked them over with my binoculars and could see one looked like it might be little forked horn Mulie buck. About this time the landowner drove up and told me that's why he wanted to see me to tell him about those two deer.

I could tell by the way my knees were feeling that my hunting season was pretty much over. I also knew that if I drove down the road it would come up behind the deer. It would be short walk over the hill to the deer. Forked horn Mulie eats as good as a big trophy deer.

When I got to the top of the hill I had to crawl on my belly in the short grass to get where I could see the deer in the weeds. His head and face were partially obscured by the weeds. His body was mostly obscured by the roll of the land, his neck was fully exposed. He was laying facing me and looking straight at me. I don't like side neck shots, but this was a straight on neck shot and at about 65 yards at that. It was the only shot I had. I took the shot and he dropped in his bed and never moved.

I walked down to him and as I got closer he kept getting bigger until I got to him and found a 4 x 4. Ground shrinkage reversed.

Think I'll give the Doctor a call tomorrow and get set up for surgery.

Thanks Ripp,

You better stop putting up all those beautiful Montana scenery pictures, next thing you know everyone will be up here and the the place will get crowded. Oh well, I'll still have this. I know all ugly dug up by farmers.

Thanks Ann, isn't very big horn wise, but he will provide the wife and I with a number of tasty steaks and roast this winter.
