My First Pronghorn Antelope
      #117834 - 29/10/08 07:31 AM

Wyoming - October 2008

After the first day, we'll call it mud fest, day 2 ended succesfully. Ed and I spotted 2 bucks at a very long distance on a West to East course. We started on an intercepting path but, when we stopped to take another look, they both had us pegged from well over 600 yards. We put a rocky point between them and us and hurried toward it and to the top to see if I could position myself for a shot. I crested the top and still found both of them looking our way. Ed said both were equal in horn length but the one on the left was bigger in body and that they were no more than 300 yards away. The two were facing directly at us on a ridgeline. I wasn't sure if I was comfortable with a 300 yard shot at a forward facing, small profiled, antelope. Ed strongly encouraged to take the shot before they stepped back over the ridge and out of sight. I layed prone, placed the crosshair right on the inside left shoulder of the buck on the left, and squeezed the shot. We heard the bullet smack hard and saw the buck rear up like a horse. When we got there, we found him gravely hurt but still standing. They are one tough animal! He moved off about a 100 yards away, quartering away and slightly uphill. I dumped him with a shot to the spine.
Chalk one up for my .257 Lasermark and 110 grain Nosler Accubonds. After busting through the left shoulder, the bullet was found in the pelvis.

I hunted in Areas 113 and 20. Because of all the snow that fell over the weekend, Area 113 was a nightmare. We got stuck a dozen times. Well, not permantly stuck but temporarily detained! We did have plenty of opportunities in 113, but it was really hard work! Area 20 was much better since it dried out during the week from the warmer weather and winds. The whole week was a challenge, including my 6 hour layover in Denver waiting for my flight to Sheridan.

Great hunt--looks like you had a fun time..less the mud..

My son and I were in SE Montana hunting over the weekend for the opener of big game--had a few inches of snow against the tent on Sunday morning---but weather quickly got nicer with yesterday being in the 60'sF...

Well, I have never hunting in either 20 or 113. I have been through them, and they have lots of antelope in the summer time, so I would guess they are good areas -- if land access is not a problem.

So...you were here in our "little Autumn snow" huh?
In west Riverton they had 20" of "little autumn snow"
Getting “delayed" in it would be pretty easy.

Land access was not a problem. In spite of the weather delays and issues, it was definitely a fun time. Next year, I'd like to combine what I did this year, with a few days at the Triple 3 Outfitters for a nice Elk. I'm awaiting a reply from them for an opening.

I was in Area 22 6-13 October. First 3 days were beautiful then the winter storm hit. Things got pretty sloppy. Took an Antelope on 7 October on state land, passed on a mule deer. The weather shut us down 10th 11th 12th flew out on the 13th. We were 4/4 on Antelope, 0/4 on Mule deer. I went a little overgunned. I took my Browning SS stalker in 375 H&H. Federal 270gr Softpoint. At 150 yards, there was still barley enough energy to take it down Same outfit I am taking to SA in April 09.
I will definately go back next year. I have heard good things about Triple 3. Good luck drawing Elk tags.

I witnessed first hand how tough pronghorn are so a .375 H&H is not overgunned!! I arrived in Sheridan on October 12th and left on the 17th so it looks like we were hit with the same storm. I'm glad we were both successful in spite of the weather. the other two hunters I went with were also successful. A tough hunt makes for great memories.

Congratulations on your first antelope. I took 2 does this year with my .375 H&H.
